Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kre Johnson.
Hi Dr. Johnson, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a small-town girl for Marion, Alabama (the home of THE Coretta Scott King). Marion is known as the birth of the Civil Rights Movement and the birth of me! Being the oldest of three kids, I was a natural-born leader. So when I declared at an early age that I wanted to be a doctor, no one was surprised. I left Alabama after high school and attended Spelman College, where I got my Bachelor of Science in Biology. Getting into medical school was sort of a challenge so I ended up going to a post-baccalaureate program, MEDPREP, at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. I finally got my chance and was accepted into medical school at Kansas City University of Medicine and the rest was history. After weathering the cold weather, I rushed back to Alabama to do my residency in Family Medicine before starting my very own private practice Brownstone Healthcare.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was not a smooth road. I was always smart but no one prepared me for the journey of having to actually get accepted into medical school. After two unsuccessful attempts at the MCAT (medical college admissions test), I found myself concerned that my dream may never become a reality. So, going to MEDPREP in Carbondale helped me actualize that dream. I did one year of test prep and the other year replicated the first year of medical school classes. So I was not just prepared for medical school; I rocked it out and got All As my first year!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Brownstone Healthcare & Aesthetics?
Founded Brownstone in 2012 and since then, I have pivoted in several ways to stay a relevant medical practice. Currently, I am the Medical Director for the City of Birmingham Employee Clinic- Brownstone BWell. Where I get to help impact healthcare from a city-wide level. I also still have my private practice, where I cater to individuals who are insured, underinsured, or uninsured in a personal way. This practice offers Direct Primary Care where the patients can contact me directly with their health care needs.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Remember that prevention is the key to wellness. See your primary care doctor at least yearly to make sure all your screenings are up to date!
