Today we’d like to introduce you to Safari Jeffries.
Hi Safari, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So I am originally from Charlotte, specifically north and west Charlotte. A lot of my younger years were spent in a community that no longer exists called Earle Village. I received my undergraduate education at Winston-Salem State University, Communications Major. After college, I worked in Radio for close to 10 years. I had a pretty good run in radio but there was a dry period where I did not find any opportunities, thus leading me to sports. Once my goal was set to working in the sports industry, I had to determine what I wanted to do. I have always had a love for football, so I thought to myself, I want to work as a scout or as an agent. With my Mother’s motivation and that plan in mind, I settled on the idea of getting my Master’s Degree at Georgetown University and sitting the NFLPA’s contract advisor’s exam. Now I am here!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Getting to this point has not been an easy road at all. For quite some time, I struggled to make a decision on what I could see myself doing after radio. The idea did not really dawn on me until I saw an episode of HBO’s Ballers for the first time. When I saw the fictional character Spencer Strasmore, played by Dwayne Johnson, I knew being an agent was something I wanted to pursue, I initially pursued the avenue of being a scout, but we all know the hurdles associated with that industry. In addition, I want to be fully in control of my schedule and my career growth, so I decided to venture out on my own and work independently as a Sports Agent. Even with becoming a Contract Advisor with the NFLPA, the exam is terribly difficult. The pass rate for the exam is roughly 40% every year. My first attempt was a failure. I said to myself after the first exam, “how the hell am I going to pass this exam on the second attempt?” I was well aware of the serious nature of the exam, so I was over-prepared the second time around. I have had challenges with feeling controlled in work settings, so scouting was not something I was sure about in a potential sports career.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Moxie Sports Group?
Moxie Sports Group is a sports, marketing & NIL representation agency that puts the player first. Of course, our focus is to make sure that we provide A1 contract negotiations to secure the best deal, but we want to cement your legacy as a person as well as an athlete. Quite often, we will ask “What does Moxie mean?” or “What does it mean to have Moxie?” Frankly put, it is the steadfast nature and unrelenting persistence to achieve the goal. While we all know there are very few talented athletes that play on the next level, we want to ensure that you have the best chances of getting that shot or the opportunity. Our specialty is caring for our players all while being a fiduciary. The sports representation industry has a bit of a dark cloud over it because of a few bad dealings in the past. We want to ensure that our players have a pleasant experience during their time as an athlete and once that part of their life is over, an even better time with post-athlete career transitions. We are a sports agency for the athletes and families that need advice when it comes to how to talk to team personnel or what to look for in contracts. We want to be the springboard that catapults our athlete’s careers to the next level and beyond. We give out tons of free information, so we will leave you with this: no matter the size of the agency or the people who run it, choose a firm that will not look at you just as some numbers or stats. Choose an agency that will buy into you as a person first, then an athlete.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The qualities that make me the most successful, I would have to say has been my ability to be adaptable and my patients.
