Meet Chris James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skorch Flamez. He and his team shared his story with us below:

Chris James

Chris “Skorch Flamez” James is a club music artist, producer, and dancer based in Philadelphia who is influenced by Baltimore Club Music, 90s pop culture, early 2000’s hip-hop, and classic Motown. From North Philadelphia, Skorch has used dance to form unity amongst cultures for over a decade. His music style is influenced by dancing and his time coming up in Philadelphia, as you can hear in “Wreck The Party” and also by the dancing lyrics in his single “Oh No, Don’t Trip”. Most recent single “Throwin’ It”. Skorch impacts the youth the most with high-energy dancing and flips. Skorch has notable credits such as Power 99’s Powerhouse, The NBA Sixers Dunksquad, DJ Diamond Kuts, Drewboy, A.B.A Ent Director, Atlanta Braves Breakers, Atlanta Falcons Dirty Birds, Smoothie King, Kai Cenat, Coulda Been Records Tour.

Skorch relocated and has been based out of Atlanta since 2021. Since he has flourished and been featured in music videos, two Atlanta professional sports organizations partnered with prime hydration by KSI & Logan Paul, featured with Kai Cenat, World of Coca Cola & more. Skorch also has his own lines of merchandise: Skorchworld / D’ziner Dancin’.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being from Philadelphia, there weren’t many outlets for positivity as a youth. I began dancing and it wasn’t the “coolest” thing nor was I the best. I overcame the obstacle of drug and alcohol addiction within my family. I wasn’t born into a family that was based on entertainment, so showing them my lifestyle as an entertainer was challenging. The style of dance “Philly/Jersey Club” is all the rage now, yet coming up and pioneering the sound of the movement it was rough getting the dance community or even the local DJs to take the sound seriously before platforms such as TikTok. Working with artists and other acts just to get the “experience” was at some point worth it, but not being able to be compensated or kept in a box or “shelved” was not on my to-do list nor my expectations. I began to take my craft seriously amongst some of my peers who didn’t take me as seriously. Being a unique talent and energy can come with some drawbacks, so learning professionalism was key.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a creative artist. I specialize in dance & music (Philly/Jersey Club & hip hop genres).

My dance style is unique to me. I fused the street dance style from my city (Philly) culture and built upon that with acrobatics, breakdancing and all styles of hip hop. I tell stories and convey my emotions through my body’s movement. My signature moves are my front flip and my favorite dance The Wutang aka Tanging! I teach my dance styles to the community in the west end area weekly.

Music and art have been my passion even before I was as great of a dancer as I am now. I began producing Philly Club Music at the age of 12, then DJ T~Blaze with Bangem in Ya Air Productions. I grew to use my athletic and artistic talents combined and found the rhythm to dance. I still drop music and plan on dropping an EP later in 2023.

Fashion is the last piece of my triad, dance, music, art and I always had a knack for creativity in wearing my clothes that even the wear-n-tear of my clothes began my style, i.e expensive sneakers beaten from fast footwork and flips also show character or sportswear with my own branding, media or catchphrases. Over the years and countless rebrands. Today, my brands are Skorch World / D’ziner Dancin’.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
When investing in my brand or my music, I’m always taking a risk, whether it’s financially, critically, or emotionally. I pray into the universe and remind myself to stay gracious and grounded, for the energy I put forth, capital invested, and time spent will manifest itself and be worth all the risks I take. Losses are also worth the risk because learning from our failures and humps along the way is key.
