Rising Stars: Meet Sierra Ellis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Ellis.

Sierra Ellis

Hi Sierra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Racine Wisconsin. I’ve been singing my whole life since I was about three years old. I’ve always loved music and as a kid on my father’s side of the family, I would go to church with my cousins and sing in a choir with them whenever I would visit in Milwaukee Wisconsin and growing up I would sing in plays at school. I also have two older brothers I grew up with and they started off rapping really young so whenever they had sessions I would be with them while they recorded songs and wrote raps being around them really influenced my urge to do music but I was always too shy. I never actually wrote my own songs until high school those years were really hard for me, so writing became an outlet I wrote ten toes down a challenge and posted it on Facebook and my peers really liked it, so it encouraged me to keep writing. The funny thing I actually started out rapping when started writing but I don’t have the voice for it and rap is competitive, so I stuck to what felt natural which was singing around the time of the pandemic/covid. I became a lot more in tune with my spirituality and God which influenced how I wanted to approach my music and the impact. I want to have on people so in 2022, I moved to Georgia and started writing my mixtape that’ll be coming out very soon.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not exactly I’ve been through a lot of losses in my life and disappointments. I’ve also struggled with really knowing what my purpose was which lead to a lot of bad decisions and mental health issues I usually would try to run away from anything that was overwhelming by drinking or smoking at a young age. Masking how I felt was a result from family trauma I grew up with a single mother who had to raise three kids so it wasn’t always easy for us and when my father passed away, it just made me feel a lot more unstable my most recent loss was my great grandfather and at the time (2020) was when I grew a relationship with God, and my path became clearer with music so I handled it more efficiently than I would have when I was younger death is always a theme in my life and even though it’s tragic I usually become wiser. There are people in life who I know have been through a lot worse, so my story isn’t for anyone to feel bad but for people to connect with, just like my music.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a singer/songwriter I’ve always been known for singing or doing music in general and my artistry is based on personal experiences and lessons I’ve learned over the years I’m proud of my progress, growth and will to be consistent even when life is challenging me being patient with myself and unlearning bad habits I’ve picked up in the past the transparency in my music is the most open I’ve ever been the fact that I even packed up and moved to a whole new state and am pursuing exactly what I said I would make me beyond grateful what sets me apart is my self-awareness and what lies within my spirit the way I hear music is really a god given gift my words are honest and my message is sincere I care about the impact I have on people and I hope I can inspire people the same way my musical influences inspired me at my darkest moments when I was a kid.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I would say when I was a lot younger maybe 4 or 5 years old, I would dance and sing in front of my mom and act like I was performing. I chose this because the younger I was, the more confident I was and outgoing I didn’t become shy until I got older.
