Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Smith.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my business right after COVID. The timing wasn’t my original plan, but it worked out when schools shut down and I could no longer travel to teach. The work I do isn’t new to me. I’ve always been good with words and writing. I majored in English and Education, and most of the jobs I had after college had something to do with one or the other. It wasn’t until I started writing my books that I realized I could be a book coach and editor full-time. Honestly, that thought didn’t happen until people started asking me to help them write and publish books. That’s when I realized what came easy to me was actually a struggle for a lot of professionals, and they were willing to pay me to help them. I started my business three years ago, and it’s been up from there.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has NOT been a smooth road. Along with not knowing the first thing about running a real company, I got married and had a baby during the first year of having my business. That, alone, brings its own set of troubles because I had to learn time management, making money to hire help, and being flexible. I am very structured, and in my mind, things should go a certain way. Well, factor in new mommyhood, grown people (clients) who do not think as I think, and the ups and downs of keeping a business afloat; it’s a roller coaster ride that is not for people with weak stomachs.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a book coach and editor. In short, I help leaders and experts write impactful books that change how people think and act. I’m also known as Brittney, the millionaire’s book coach! Not just because my clients are millionaires but because they have a millionaires mindset. I work with people who are go-getters, and that makes a huge difference in the types of books they write. I specialize in helping my clients tell their stories, but for the purpose of increasing their influence–not just because they want to write a book for the fun of it.
I am most proud of helping my clients reach their goals because I cannot tell you how many of them thought that becoming an author was out of their reach. One of the things that set me apart as a book coach and editor is that I am professionally trained in this. I didn’t just write a book and say, “Oh, I should help other people do this.” No shade anyone who did, but that’s not me. I went to school to learn this, and then I applied what I learned to my own books. I could instruct someone to write a book and publish it with my eyes closed and my hands tied behind my back. I can help my clients better because I have been in their shoes, and I know what they are thinking (good and bad).
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m a pen-to-paper kind of girl, so I’m not really into podcasts, and I don’t use any must-have apps. However, what I can tell you is that I’m an avid reader. Each year, I decide the type of books I will read, and that is how I learn how to write & edit better. I also read books to learn how to coach, run a business, and live the life I want to live. For most of this year, I’ve read fiction novels so far. Although I do not help my clients write fiction, the books continue to teach me what makes a book relatable and what makes a book something is written so well that you can’t get it out of your mind once you’re done. This is information I pass on to my clients.
