Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Levin.
Hi Alexis, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Originally from Boston, MA, I moved to Savannah in 2018. Originally my dream was to work in large event planning and management. I jumped in working on weddings and larger events down here in Savannah. I quickly began to realize that the experiences I was having on a more regular basis at restaurants and bars felt much more meaningful and impactful than those at the large, pre-designed events.
After years of working in the food and beverage industry – I was inspired to start a concept of my own. Beginning right before the pandemic hit – I gave my notice and began the journey of what became Shuk.
Over a year of renovations coupled with countless hours of planning Shuk finally came to fruition in November 2022. Inspired by my Israeli heritage – we have created a place for the community to gather and relish in fresh, honest fare inspired by flavors of the Mediterranean.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As any ‘in person’ business owner will tell you – the pandemic slowed our progress in building Shuk. Today we are still building the business, with new challenges arising every day. From staffing to procuring the right products, to building our community- our team works together every day to make Shuk the best it can be.
We’ve been impressed with Shuk, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Shuk is a new Mediterranean dining experience located in Savannah’s Victorian District. With a focus on counter service, guests are able to indulge in fresh and interesting food options without a large price tag or wait time. Locals, students, and tourists alike can enjoy mainstays such as hummus, falafel and pita sandwiches, as well as small plates and salads inspired by the Eastern Mediterranean.
We are offering the community space unlike any other in Savannah – with our one-of-a-kind indoor/ outdoor patio and bar. Our selection of unpretentious Eastern Mediterranean fare is unlike anything Savannah has!
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The biggest trend (which has already begun) is a demand to treat food and beverage staff with more respect – both from the consumer and the employer’s perspectives.
At Shuk, we have leaned into this trend – paying our staff a living wage and sharing tips between all departments.
