Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy and Liz.
Hi Kathy and Liz, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, my mom was a single parent and worked 2, sometimes 3, jobs to support us. We led a very busy life, but we always found time on the weekends to cook or bake together and catch up on life. I treasured those moments, which made me want to go into the food industry when I got older.
My mom was a nurse for over 40 years, and when I graduated college, I started in the food industry, brokering baking items in the grocery store. I had a passion for baking, so in 2009, I went to The Culinary Institute of America to get my pastry degree. I worked my way up in the kitchen to become a pastry chef. I then wanted to combine my business and pastry degrees, so I worked for a chocolate manufacturer for many years and most recently joined a cake pop company.
In 2021, mom and I decided to bring our combined love of baking to the public and formed 2 Cups of Sugar. We consider ourselves the 2 cups – it’s not 2 cups of sugar in each baked good! We get that question a lot…
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was definitely a struggle in the beginning because we were trying to find the best avenue to sell our products. We started with a boutique shop that allowed you to sell baked goods, but we quickly realized the customers were not shopping for food so our sales were not what we’d hoped.
We also had many expenses upfront, such as equipment, marketing materials, packaging, etc. so it was a bit discouraging in the beginning to think we could make a profit.
We discovered the Snellville farmer’s market in 2022 and knew this would be the right fit for us. The first couple of months were slow because we were new and customers hadn’t tried our products before. However, after they would buy our goodies, they would come back over and over. Before we knew it, we had our “regulars”!
These days life is a bit busy, so you can request your indulgence by emailing us.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are proud that all our baked goods are free from preservatives, flavorings and colors. We only use the best and simple ingredients.
When you read our ingredient statement, you will see things like butter, sugar, eggs, flour, vanilla… The only ingredient you don’t see on the label, which is probably the best one of them all, is LOVE!
We also love to adapt based on what our customers are looking for. For example, our most popular item is our banana bread, and after many customers asked for it with nuts, we decided to offer two options. Something as little as this may sound silly, but we know this is an indulgence for our customers and we want to ensure it’s worth it!
How do you think about happiness?
When Mom and I started this company, we promised each other we would only do this as long as it was fun for us. Luckily, that is still the case today!
We love taking time out of our busy schedules to spend time together in the kitchen and putting all our love into our baked goods. It’s our chance to simply be together as a team and put all the craziness of life to the side.
