Meet Amy Castro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Castro.

Amy Castro

Amy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
During my childhood, my mother owned two salons that lacked modern payment options like PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle. As a peaceful person, my mother would comply with customers’ requests, even if they refused to pay after hours of service. When my mother asked me if I wanted to follow in her footsteps at the age of 14-15, I immediately declined. However, I did help her with some wedding services, and I had an innate talent for it.

As I grew older, I started to question my interests. I realized that I was always curious about people’s appearances and how they achieved their looks. This led me to get licensed in various beauty services, including nails, hair color, waxing, and makeup. After owning a salon myself, I realized that it wasn’t for me.

My first job was in Charlotte, NC, with Good Morning America and the Kennedy brothers. This made me realize that I wanted to be a Production Hair and Makeup Artist. It has been a great blessing from God to be able to do what I love. I feel boundlessly blessed.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the challenges I’ve faced is befriending someone in the hopes that they will support me, only to realize later that they are not truly a friend and are only interested in their own gain.

To be different, I have made a conscious effort to help other aspiring makeup artists who are willing to learn and grow. I have taken a select few under my wing, those who have the same level of talent as me or even greater.

I am grateful to the handful of people who have done the same for me, and I continue to keep in touch with them.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
It’s amazing to be recognized for my flawless work! I come from a family of artistic individuals, including grandparents, parents, and siblings, so creativity runs in my blood.

I’ve also been complimented on my great attitude, which is rare in the makeup artist industry, where some tend to become arrogant after years of experience. However, I strive to remain humble and maintain a positive energy, always seeking opportunities for growth. When I meet other makeup artists, I love learning about their techniques and creative ideas. Being on set excites me as though it’s my first time, and I firmly believe there’s always room for improvement.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I enjoy purchasing magazines and books that feature special effects, but as a visual person, I find platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Pinterest to be a great source of inspiration. Additionally, networking with others is also helpful.
