Today we’d like to introduce you to Mila Jam.
Hi Mila, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Georgia and always had big dreams of traveling the world and becoming a successful performing artist. I knew that New York City would be the gateway to my dreams, so I ventured off to the Big Apple to pursue musical theater. Along the way, I discovered my truth as a Transwoman and started performing my own cabaret shows! Those shows led to more singing, songwriting and working on my own music. That led to my activism and fighting for to ghts for my community. I combined art & activism to create Artivism and this is how I make a difference in the world. My journey has shown me how powerful being true to yourself can be and incorporating that into your art can take you places you never expected.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Many of the struggles I’ve had to overcome include endless amounts of transphobia, juggling racial and gender discrimination, having to be completely self-reliant and dodging constant microaggressions. I’ve been emotionally abused and physically taken advantage of. I’ve been bullied and celebrated at the same time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m known for my music and lgbtq+ activism. I’m most proud of staying true to myself and being a beacon of light for my community.
I’m proud of the “Stop Killing Us” social media campaign I created that has gotten recognition on many platforms including Billboard and Paper magazine!
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
You have to be willing to take risks and put yourself out there even when it’s the toughest thing today. You only win when u participate. Maintaining good relationships is the key to success, especially in the performing arts industry.
