Daily Inspiration: Meet Dona Georgieva

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dona Georgieva.

Dona Georgieva

Hi Dona, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My flow arts journey began when I was 21 years old and went to my first burn event. Burns are kind of like festivals but with a large emphasis on community collaboration, artistic expression, and no money exchange. All burns around the country are smaller regional events connected to the biggest burn called Burning Man in Black Rock City, Nevada. For a full circle moment, the biggest Pyro Priestess show to date was last year’s 2022 Burning Man Conclave Performance with the troupe Southern Flare sharing the stage in the world’s largest fire circle. As an avid lover of all things music, I have always loved to dance but finding fire flow really inspired me. Flow arts is physical meditation to me. It is healing for the mind, body, and soul and besides performing, I feel one of my biggest duties is to spread the joy of flow arts so others can feel the healing fun that comes with it! Even from an early age, I was always thriving in the spotlight from putting on grassroots kid’s talent shows with my childhood friends in Bulgaria for our neighbors to 8 years of musical chorus productions in school while growing up here in America, the stage always found me but finding circus arts really paved the way for my artistic expression. I’m originally from Bulgaria having lived not only there but in 3 total continents before age 10. My mom was a medical professor developing medicine so my family and I lived in Libya for 2 years before moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 2000. Having traveled so much at an early age inspired me to never stop exploring and never stop connecting with unique people and unique perspectives. Today you can find Pyro Priestess fire performing on stages across America with a main focus on the east coast at this time. Dragonstaff is my main favorite fire prop; however my show is all about variety so in one show, you won’t see me spin the same shape twice!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a gig-based performer definitely comes with its challenges. Besides finding and booking the next gig, a big part of the challenge is learning to be your own agent. I act as my own agent constantly responding to clients, writing contracts, and building custom shows. Other challenges include creating appropriate fire-safe costumes and traveling to gigs. All in all, every challenge is worth it because getting to do what you love is priceless.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I perform fire shows which include a variety of props ranging from small to big fire moments. It’s all about elevating the vibes of a party leaving guests amazed and entertained! I’m definitely known for my dragon staff flow as I’ve been spinning this for the longest, 10+ years. I’m proud to offer a true fire variety experience which includes lots of object manipulation like poi, fire hooping, fans, contact staff, fire levitation wand, fire umbrella, fire belt, and fire eating to name a few. I’d say my ability to tap into music while performing really sets me apart. My positive go-getter attitude definitely sets me apart too as I’m ready to accommodate any client request within my abilities.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that Atlanta is a hot spot for all kinds of cultures! There is never a dull moment here with so many amazing events, major and underground, to enjoy. I love getting to meet people from all over the world on a regular basis. My least favorite thing is an obvious one: the traffic, lol!
