Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Moore.
Hi Devin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At the age of 14, I became the Founder of Race To Speak Up, an anti-bullying organization. After going through bullying, I knew I wanted to be a part of the positive change that puts an end to this bullying epidemic. Then Race To Speak Up was born. Through Race To Speak Up, I have the opportunity to speak to students in different communities, schools, libraries, National Conferences, workshops, and more in order to further this anti-bullying work. Along this journey, I knew that I wanted to tell my bullying story through a children’s book so that we can start this conversation at a young age. Devin Speaks Up! is about being upstanders, loving who you are, speaking up to someone you trust about being bullied, and kindness matters. I’m very happy to continue this Race To Speak Up Anti-bullying journey. This is my life’s work.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This hasn’t been a smooth road. It takes a lot of time, energy, effort, as well as money to run an organization and be an entrepreneur. Some of the obstacles include trying to bring anti-bullying education to a school that says they don’t have bullying. It is always good to learn new ways to handle this issue, even if you feel it isn’t a problem in your environment. An anti-bullying poster on the school wall isn’t enough.
Another obstacle is not knowing everything there is to know about effectively running a nonprofit. I’m happy and thankful for the support of all the other entrepreneurs and business leaders that have helped and gave advice on the best ways to move forward.
One more challenge I would like to mention is time management. I have become much better at this now, as a 19 y/o, compared to a 14 y/o. I use things like Google Calendar, notes, and other apps related to keeping track of time. Some of the things I need to keep track of include posting on social media, responding to emails, scheduling and having Zoom calls, and going to in-person events. It is a lot, but it can get done!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Race To Speak Up is an anti-bullying organization. We give Race To Speak Up Against Bullying Workshops and Youth Entrepreneurship Presentations to students, parents, and educators in order to teach the best ways to end bullying and create a positive world. What sets me apart from others is not only am I discussing this bullying topic with others and have lived through it, I am effectively working to create safer spaces in more and more communities. From spreading kindness on social media through positive affirmations to leading anti-bullying workshops to speaking on National Conferences, to giving Devin Speaks Up! Book Readings/Assemblies for students, and potentially saving lives.
I’m most proud of when a student comes up to me and says, “Devin, I will Race To Speak Up Against Bullying, just like you!”
We want readers to know that you can bring the Race To Speak Up Against Bullying Workshops, Youth Entrepreneurship Presentations, and Devin Speaks Up! Book Readings to your schools, libraries, summer camps, bookstores, and communities. It’s easy to connect with me through my website, social media, and email.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m not as confident as I may seem. It isn’t easy to get up in front of a large group of people and talk to them about such a heavy topic, but I understand that it needs to be done.
