Today we’d like to introduce you to Fabian Williams.
Fabian, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always worked on my art outside of my main job as an art director. After I left my last contract job, I decided to focus on doing my personal art since the things I cared most about, social and political issues, I wasn’t doing at work. So, I focused on creating art that spoke to the issues I cared about using the communication skills I learned in advertising. Once I started doing murals, it took off. I started getting national press last year and it has continued since then.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anytime you switch careers, there’s going to be some rough patches. My money was definitely funny. My lights and gas were cut off several times and I wore cut off shorts for like 2 years because I was pretty poor. However, I was consistent with my efforts to put my work out and stay on message. Eventually, the work started to get noticed in the light that I desired and I kept pushing. I continue to challenge myself and that helps me grow. It’s a beautiful struggle.
Please tell us about Occasional Superstar.
My business is art. I paint and create works that speak to social issues from police brutality to uplifting the historical icons and moments that will uplift the people who have been historically oppressed, typically the poor and people of color. I tend to attract organizations who want to stand on the side of justice and equality, which you would hope means every American company.
I’m proud of the fact that my general goal is to leave this planet better than I found it and a better place for my children to exist in. When I say better, I mean a more prosperous place because opportunities abound because this society embraces that philosophy through art and culture, which in my view, essentially control everything. Art is a powerful medium and it can do a lot of good.
What sets me apart from others I’m thinking is the soul. I like to think my work is one part journalism and one part soul food.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory as a child was going to be an artist, no matter what.
