Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Mystery.

Madison Mystery

Madison, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started making monsters 12 years ago. It was a way for me to start to heal from my difficult past. I started adopting them out slowly and eventually, I started to vend at small local events. I didn’t start investing all my time into them until 2020. The pandemic made it impossible to sell face to face, and I realized I needed to move my business online. I wasn’t sure how it would work out, but I jumped in with two feet and here we are nearly three years later! I now make several different kinds of plush under the name of my original monster, ScareCares.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but nothing ever is! Life is full of obstacles, and starting a business is no different. I think that the biggest obstacle I faced, and still face, is my own doubt. Am I choosing the right path? What if no one likes my art? I let questions like these hold me back for a long time. It finally came to the point where a choice needed to be made and I took the leap to believe in myself. I have to continue to believe every single day!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a mixed media artist, with my current focus being sewing and fiber arts. My plushies come in various shapes and sizes. The most popular are the Wildlings. There are 3 sizes, with the largest being weighted to help battle anxiety. I’m passionate about bringing awareness to mental health and the effects of trauma. I’m an adult survivor of childhood trauma. I’ve learned that even with a past like mine, you can still heal and prosper. It takes real work, and the responsibility lies solely with you. But there is a way forward, and even though it’s difficult; it’s worth it.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I wouldn’t be here without my husband, Benjamin. He’s believed in me every step of the way, even when I didn’t. He continues to help me with art markets and photography. He’s been my rock, and I’m so lucky to have him!
