Today we’d like to introduce you to Donovan Tate.
Hi Donovan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started doing music at an early age. Music played a part on my mom’s side of the family. I self-taught myself playing the piano and took piano and music lessons. My first instrument was the drum set, which I drove my mom crazy. My next-door neighbor who was my babysitter bought me an acoustic guitar for Christmas. In the third grade, I was taught to play the recorder in elementary school.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being rejected by record companies can be disappointed. But I’ve learned how to maintain doing everything myself without help from labels. I was signed on a label, but it was a waste of my time. Although I had my own label I started back in 1997. Nowadays, you don’t need to be signed on a label. It’s all about DIY (Do It Yourself).
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I first started out doing New Wave/Synth-pop and electronic as a teenager. New Wave was the big thing back the 1980’s. Synthesizers was the dominant instrument used in music. I later got into Gothic music. My music do have a dark texture and a cinema film soundscapes. I was already listening to The Cure as a teenager. Then Clan Of Xymox and Sisters Of Mercy became a big influence by seeing their video on MTV and hearing them on the radio program called The Edge; a radio show that plays music that’s not mainstream. I also specialize in composing music for films. That’s a bigger step to be in. I’m now back doing electronic music. The new direction approach is making Ambient music. Something with a science fiction feel. What I’m proud of being successful is making a name for myself. I’m underground, and I’m not rich. It’s not about the money. It’s about the music and being creative. And making music what I want. What sets me apart from other black artists is doing something different and not being intimidated being different.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Taking initiative. Being motivated and determined. Never give up. And to be inspired.
