Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Crosby.
Kelly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m an artist. I’m a painter, freelance writer and poet. I’ve been crazy about art ever since I was a little girl. But my art business began around 2012. I have been painting and selling my work for many years but the last recession made we realize that I should pursue my artistic dreams. Not too many so-called reliable jobs were out there so that just left me with my art supplies, my talent and entrepreneurial spirit.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely a path of hills and valleys. There is the struggle of finding enough capital to support the business or to create large art projects like murals. There will definitely be times of almost paralyzing self-doubt, wondering if you ever find your audience. But you have to stay the course. Keep creating and sharing your work with the world. Persistence is key. You will find those who are in love with your craft and will support you.
Please tell us about Kelly Crosby Design.
I’m primarily a painter. I love to do abstract paintings. But lately, I’ve been doing a lot of works based on multiculturalism and religious tolerance. I have a series of paintings about Muslim women that I’m so proud and many people of all faiths have enjoyed the works as well. As an African American and Muslim woman, I feel like it’s my duty to show the beauty of different cultures and the diversity of Muslim cultures around the world. I also create crafts, such as painted glass vases and decorative boxes. I’ve also been able to offer my work on greeting cards, posters and apparel.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Thankfully, within the last 20 years, there has definitely been a rise of women in the fine arts. Many women are currently pursuing careers as artists, art professors and arts administrators. I’m optimistic that this trend will continue and we will see more women in positions of power at large art institutions.
