Daily Inspiration: Meet James Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Williams.

James Williams

James, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into music started when I was just a little boy living in Montgomery, AL. My father was and still is a huge fan of music. I remember him putting on records and listening all day. There was this one album he had, and the cover was a kid’s drawing, and I just knew the album sounded like the cover! So he puts it on, and it’s Tom Tom Club, Genius of Love. I was mesmerized! My love for music would continue to grow, and my ears would begin to listen more. I joined the band in middle school and stayed all through college, marching with the Marching Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman College. College is where it really started jumping! I downloaded this program on my computer and began mixing. This was during the time when Napster and Limewire was everyone’s best friend and music was most available. I’m talking about rare songs, unheard remixes, unreleased songs, all of it! My roommates and I would throw parties at our apartment and bring out the whole school.

It got to the point where my homie and I would rent out clubhouses and restaurants and throw parties under the monicker Triple S Entertainment. A time was had by all!! Fast forward back home to ATL, I was selected to be a contestant in the Pepsi Superstar DJ Competition, where I made it to the second round. Being there opened up so many doors! The bookings started coming left and right! Years later, they are STILL pouring in! Being booked and busy is really a thing! Every time I think it’s time for me to retire, an event comes along and shows me why I still do what I do. I am provided the chance to be the curator of a soundtrack of people’s lives. From weddings to school dances to private parties, to everything in between, and I mean everything! I love to see people react to my transitions. Seeing the joy on their faces while they sing along and twirl around is what keeps me going! I’m over 20 years in at this point! No sense in stopping now!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been rough. There were times where I doubted myself and didn’t think I should be DJing anymore. I got tired and stressed. After the pandemic, I wasn’t handling social gatherings very well. I would be annoyed when people would request songs. I lost my mojo. It took someone to tell me it was me. I was self-sabotaging myself. He told me to change my mindset. Stop saying I’m tired and don’t want to do this event! So I did! Instead, I started being enthusiastic about my events. CONSIDERABLE difference!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a DJ! Known as DJ XXXclusive or DJ Bubba, I have been DJing now for over 2o years from ATL to FL. I’m most proud of the joy I have been able to bring to the masses! I’m a person full of love, so it fills me up. I am known for my transitions and exclusive mixes! They definitely set me aside from other DJs. I also am a co-host on The Benjamin Dixon Show which airs on the YouTube channel of the same name!

What does success mean to you?
Of course, one of the goals of success is gaining significant profit. To me, success is satisfying the client! Them thanking me for my services and using me for future events! The client being so impressed they recommend me to their friends and family!
