Community Highlights: Meet Chauncey Figgures of CMF Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chauncey Figgures.

Chauncey Figgures

Hi Chauncey, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I never had a camera in my life when I started out,I always was in the shadow aspect! I shadowed Mrs Cynthia Smith who’s a close friend of mine, and that’s when I knew I wanted to become a photographer! I went bought a camera and started shooting but at one moment I didn’t felt like shooting anymore, so I took a two-month Hiatus and out of nowhere I randomly picked up my camera and started practicing again and that’s when I knew I truly loved it! So that’s when CMF Photography was born!  I started out doing free shoots just to get the practice while I was still in college! I graduated from the University of Tennessee of Chattanooga with a Degree in Journalism in December of 2022. At first, I wanted to go into the news industry because that’s what I wanted to pursue. I took this Photojournalism class while in college, and it helped me realize that photography was my passion, and and I knew that I wanted to do this as a job!

I was doing photography as a hobby while working at Michael Arts Store as a part-timer as well, and it was definitely making it hard for me editing wise and clientele was on its peak, that’s I knew I had to make a change for myself, so with prayer and fasting I felt on my heart that I knew photography was right for me and May 2023 I have decided to go into photography full time. From there, I have put my whole focus on my Photography business and from that point on, I have been offering portraits, family sessions, couples, and weddings
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
At first, it was challenging because I have never been in this position before. I truly thank God for leading and guiding me along the way. It has not been easy, As a photographer you have to go through trials and errors as experience comes with time. I had to deal clients not being satisfied with the products, while had to face negative comments as well as clients not respecting my prices. I had learn that there’s are times where you will get great feedback, like clients by more photos because they love their photoshoot but can also receive some of the toughest criticism like they didn’t like how they were looking or even blame me for not fixing their hair and etc.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about CMF Photography?
My Changes-  CMF Photography is a creative business. We specialize in Creative Portraits, Family Sessions, Couples, and Weddings. What we are known is we take pride in being creative that’s what separates us from other businesses. we love for others to have a great experience with us. We love to get creative if it’s having props in the set or using vibrant colors. What I’m most proud is how I handle myself and how I market my business through social media and my business cards and how to target a specific audience.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
The advice I would give to others who are starting out is to start small but dream big. You don’t need to do too much starting out it doesn’t hurt to offer free shoots to get that practice! Get models for each category or whatever you love shooting and build your portfolio. Be prepared for people to say no! I had to learn that, and it made me grow into a great photographer. Also, be prepared for hard criticism that will also help you grow! One thing I learned about photography especially getting to know your camera is watching videos through YouTube. There are many professional photographers who do videos about lighting, posing, etc. and lastly get a mentor; this will definitely help you in the long run. I had many mentors who helped me, so don’t be afraid to reach out.
