Today we’d like to introduce you to Bohan Cheng.
Bohan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have nurtured a multitude of hobbies since childhood, with a particular inclination for collecting small and interesting things. This early fascination with collecting served as the foundation for my eventual passion for collage and the art of blending diverse materials. Since my parents majored in engineering and finance, they supported me in contact with art and encouraged me to be exposed to and understand art from multiple perspectives, including music, painting, and handcraft.
Upon entering college, I embarked on a journey to choose my major. It was during my studies in urban planning that I gradually honed my vision for the future. Urban planning, with its fusion of fundamental architectural knowledge, environmental aesthetics, and policy analysis, presented me with various paths to explore before I considered my ultimate direction. Ultimately, I decided to pursue a graduate program in interior design, captivated by the focus on smaller-scale space design.
During my study at SCAD, my educational experience extended beyond interior design courses. I also engaged in elective film classes to gain insight into the art of film set design through practical exposure. While both interior design and film set design revolve around creating purposeful spaces, they cater to different objectives and entail distinct demands. Interior design revolves around optimizing the functionality of spaces and meeting user needs while also prioritizing aesthetic considerations. In contrast, film set design hinges on producing a compelling visual narrative, where visual appeal and scene congruence take precedence.
In addition to my learning, I also developed a hobby in photography, which is closely intertwined with design. The act of observation through a photographer’s lens has a profound impact on design thinking. Creative photography has further refined my capacity for divergent thinking, enabling me to transcend conventional boundaries, identify gaps, and uncover innovative breakthroughs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not really. It has taken me a while to discover the path that genuinely resonates with me. My previous major was often seen as a promising career path with ample growth potential, but it didn’t align with my passions. Changing to a new major required significant effort and dedication to build a suitable portfolio. Additionally, it took some time to unearth my interests. I’ve developed a strong preference for Polaroid photography and have recently made some progress in digital photography.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in interior design, which I am set to complete this November. My passion lies in shaping interior spaces to meet the unique needs and desires of my clients. My goal is always to create environments that bring joy and comfort to those who inhabit them.
While some may be aware of my proficiency in interior design, I also harbor a parallel career interest in production design for film students. This offers me a compelling alternative path for my future endeavors, further expanding the scope of my creative pursuits.
In many aspects of my life, I hold a strong affinity for the vintage and the classic. This preference extends to my daily outfits, as I prefer vintage clothing over fast fashion, and I frequently explore vintage shops to uncover timeless gems. My artistic endeavors also reflect this nostalgia, as I derive satisfaction from working with old Polaroid and film cameras to craft my artwork.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think it is good luck. (But recently been bad luck haha)
