Life & Work with Deanna Sirlin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Sirlin.

Deanna Sirlin

Hi Deanna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been thinking about color and light my entire life – the primary medium I choose to express this is painting. The physicality of color as it connects to myself is what I think about when I am making a work. However, for the last twenty years, I have been working across platforms, in installation, video, and public art.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It is never easy to be an artist—it is a challenge every single day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
All my work is about light as it is linked to color: the language of color through the medium of light is my particular interest. Light is filtered through my work to create projections of color. The work alters the viewer’s perception of the space it occupies by flooding that space with color and also of the exterior world seen through the work. The experience of immersion in color and light is significant to the content of my work. As you see the world through the lens of my transparencies, their color changes your way of seeing.

I begin all works with a painting that morphs across other platforms, allowing the viewer to be in the work in different ways. The way I paint is very physical. My paintings are on canvas, and in the last five or six years, I’ve been painting them on the ground. The physicality of the painting and being inside of the work of art are very important to me. They have to do with connection, intimacy, and allowing the viewer to be in the work. The physicality of my work connects it to the physical presence of the viewer and immersion in color.

And me, I’m in the work. I’m always in the work.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
The ability to continue making art.
