Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Tang.
Hi Tom, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a graphic designer. I graduated in 2021 from MICA and spent two years working in graphic design studios in Shanghai China, I’m currently at my first year at Yale MFA program.
I have always been fascinated by the intricate workings of the cosmos and sought to integrate that love into my art career. During my design education and career, I became increasingly aware of the inequalities perpetuated by capitalism. This awareness was solidified during a cosmetic rebranding project in the midst of the pandemic, which made me question the role of design in society.
In my quest to redefine the purpose of design, I found inspiration in the way physicists explore the possibilities of the world despite countless restrictions. I began to view art as a tool for questioning and amplifying voices. This led to my project current projects where I sought to blur the boundaries between humans and commodities and empower marginalized voices.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has not been entirely smooth, primarily due to my commitment to addressing the issues of capitalism in my work. One of the significant struggles I’ve encountered along the way is the clash between my ideals and the commercial demands of the design industry. The realization that design can inadvertently perpetuate inequalities and exploit human vulnerabilities within the capitalist system created an internal conflict.
Additionally, while I’ve been able to gain some recognition for my projects, I’ve felt constrained by the limitations of the capitalist framework. Breaking free from these constraints and making a more significant impact on societal issues has been an ongoing challenge. Despite these hurdles, I remain committed to using my design skills to amplify the voices of marginalized individuals and address the problems associated with capitalism, in the hope of contributing to positive societal change.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
+86 is a newly founded graphic design studio currently based in Chengdu, China. We are not just a design studio; it’s a passionate endeavor founded on the principles and goals of challenging the existing system. We are dedicated to using design as a means to challenge the status quo and address the inequalities and ethical concerns embedded within the capitalist system. I’m glad that I was able to work with people who has same visions as I did. Difficulties are massive since we’ve just started, but we are constantly adapting and seeking the opportunity to bring out works that amplify the voices of marginalized individuals and empower them to fight back against the brutal system.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
“The Elegant Universe” by Brian Greene has been a fascinating and enlightening resource in my life, both personally and professionally. This book delves into the intricate world of theoretical physics, string theory, and the nature of the universe. What makes it particularly impactful for me is the way it provides perspective on our place in the grand scheme of things.
In my work, this broader perspective is invaluable as it encourages me to think critically, challenge norms, and push the boundaries of design. It helps me approach design problems with an open mind, encouraging creativity and a willingness to explore unconventional solutions.
