Today we’d like to introduce you to Susanna Tung.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I studied nutrition back in college but didn’t really have an interest in the medical field. At the same time, I was always interested in the art field. I loved going to exhibitions, making craftwork, and just appreciating artworks in general. I took a video editing/animation class in my senior year of college and immediately fell in love with motion graphics. That’s when I decided to come to the US to pursue my dream of being a professional motion designer. I went to SCAD for master’s studies and met a lot of great people that keeps motivating, and helping me to become the person I want to become.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was a struggle at first. Coming from a medical background with no exposure to the art-related field, I always self-doubt myself, wondering if changing career paths was the right choice. I was always scared if I would regret this change in the future and doubted myself I could do this cause I don’t consider myself born with artistic talent. I wasn’t adjusted to the pace of the class in the beginning. We only had three weeks to finish a project, from idealization to animation. However, as I keep creating, I eventually become accustomed to the schedule. My work keeps improving and now, I have never been so sure that I have chosen the right path.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a motion designer based in Brooklyn, NY. My work mainly focuses on 2d Illustrative motion but have been continuously exploring abstract, visual music kind of aesthetics recently. I try to capture daily moments in my artwork. It is a representation of my thoughts, life experiences, emotions, and perspective of how I view the world. I guess that’s what differentiates me from the others. Everyone each has their own unique story to tell, and we all are different from each other.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Probably that I’m actually an active and outgoing person. A lot of people assume I’m quiet and introverted based on my appearance but I actually like to go out with friends, and enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities. My portfolio also mainly consists of 2d work, but I’m actually doing some basic 3d and recently exploring visual music/more abstract side of motion designs.
