Meet Brookhaven Attorney: Houston Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Houston Smith.

Houston, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As an attorney, my cases can take months to years to resolve so I turned to photography as a way of seeing nearly immediate results from my artistic endeavors. My photographs have been published in Jezebel magazine, and a few were chosen for permanent exhibition in the Atlanta chapter of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants as well as non-permanent display in several galleries in Atlanta.

Through photography, I have the pleasure of meeting a great number of people I would never otherwise come across.

Has it been a smooth road?
Photography is not without its challenges. Learning to balance the artistic vision with the precision needed in lens selection, camera settings, and lighting is a craft which I continue to learn.

Do you feel luck has played a role in your life?
I believe that the harder you work, the luckier you get. That said, I have certainly gotten some breaks through people I luckily knew. For example, I remain convinced that I was admitted to law school by knowing a lawyer who was well placed in the legal community. And I have been lucky enough to work with some great models by virtue of knowing people who knew them.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
In law, as in photography, I find the following to be most important: preparation, diligence, attention to detail, professionalism, and the ability to be artistic as well as technical.

Tell us about your favorite and least favorites things about our city.
I am one of the few Atlanta natives. The list of positives far outweighs the negatives (or else I would not still be here!). Positives in no particular order: green spaces, generally friendly people, lower cost of living as compared to other major cities, great restaurants, diverse neighborhoods. Negatives in no particular order; TRAFFIC, too far from the beach, a bit too sprawling, lack of destinations for in-town-for-a-few days friends.
