Today we’d like to introduce you to Eddie Moore.
Eddie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been drawing my own characters and copying my favorite cartoons ever since I was a little kid. I actually grew up wanting to become a cartoonist because I wanted to create things similar to what I loved to watch. In high school, I was introduced to Photoshop by a friend but I was mainly doing photo manipulation. From there, I found my way to Graphic Design as a discipline and possible career path and went on to major and get my BFA in Graphic Design from the University of South Carolina.
While in school, I found my way back to love for illustration when Instagram came out. At a point in time, I was big into drawing things that were plays on words. I saw the term “State of Mind” on a shopping bag and pushed it a little further and drew South Carolina State of Mind. This being the outline of South Carolina, with a grain pattern on the inside. The aesthetic and first well-received idea for my brand was born through that design. From there I have been able to print shirts, stickers and other designs and sell them online and to friends.
After graduating with a BFA in Graphic Design, I moved to Atlanta for a graphic design internship at a sales and marketing company. I went on to work there full time for 2 years and continued to develop my own illustration style and pick up commissioned projects from friends on the side. Through word of mouth and social media, I have been able to expand my audience as far as people who enjoy my work and my client base. I am now freelancing as both an illustrator and a graphic designer and working on my clothing brand SoM.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have definitely been challenges and there are still challenges that will always have to be worked through. One of the big struggles was finding an audience/clients and finding a way to essentially amplify your own voice so that more people care about what you have going on. I’m lucky to have fostered some pretty great relationships with people and word of mouth really has done a lot more for me than I ever thought it would.
There were a lot of struggles working a full-time job and trying to keep energy high after work for personal projects and there are a lot of struggles being a freelancer and having to find work for yourself.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Eddie Moore Dsgn & State of Mind Clothing Co. – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As a freelancer, I illustrate, design, and do some acrylic painting. I enjoy illustrating the most and have a much more pronounced style than some of my design work. Right now my work is known for showing movement and the color choices. I’m also known for doing a lot of self-portraits in different styles and a lot of my work also plays on pop culture. For the most part, when it comes to commission work, I can replicate any style the client needs but I do have people come to me for my style specifically as well.
State of Mind Clothing Co. is most well known for the South Carolina State of Mind design that I released which a lot of people seemed to grasp onto. The brain aesthetic is something that people look for and then, I love to play around with through different designs. I’m really proud of the organic core following it has and how people have responded.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love all of the art and things centered around art Atlanta has to offer. I also love that there are different options within that category and that all of the art from the city doesn’t look the same. It offers a very diverse experience.
The thing I like least about the city is the traffic without a doubt.
