Today we’d like to introduce you to Makeup Moxie.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey in beauty started 18 years ago. I started as a bridal makeup artist. After years of focusing on bridal, I decided to tap into cosmetic retail. I started as a counter mua and worked my way up to become an area executive for two companies and then a trainer. After years of working as a trainer, I decided to branch out into the world of TV/film full-time in 2021. During this journey of working in television, I finally reached my goal and that is becoming a Local 798 member with I.A.T.S.E. As of May of 2023. I’ve had the opportunity to work on some of the most amazing shows, and now my ultimate goal is to tap into movies.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey hasn’t been easy. Being one of five boys raised in north Philadelphia wasn’t easy. Especially being a bearded male makeup artist. You didn’t see many males in the industry that look like me! For years I struggled with trying to fit in. It wasn’t until one of my precious managers noticed my struggle and told me “When you don’t see a lane that you fit into, create your own”! That boost of confidence gave me what was needed to realize that I was exactly where I was supposed to be! And maybe I am the face needed to be seen for boys that look like me who choose not to walk around with a full face of makeup but still love beauty.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a makeup artist and have been in artist for 18-plus years. I specialize in bridal/beauty makeup. My love for beauty goes back to growing up watching my mother. To me, she is the epitome of beauty. My most proud moment was getting into the union for TV/film Local 798. Growing up I would always watch the credits and wonder how people would get those jobs. To now see my name in the credits is mind-blowing to me. I think what sets me apart from everyone else is my willingness to keep learning. I never get comfortable and always feel like there is more to learn. Not just from those who have been doing it longer than me, but from babies who have just started doing makeup six months ago.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I feel like taking risk are necessary. Some call it stepping out on faith and that is exactly what I did to get to this point. When relocating to Atlanta I didn’t have a clue as to how I was going to get on set to work towards getting into the union. I didn’t know a soul in Atlanta. I only knew what god told me. So for me, that was enough! I reached out to everyone possible to get just one opportunity to get on set and prove myself. After I got my first shot, doors just began to open for me. I feel that taking risks builds character. It separates the dreamers from the doers.
