Today we’d like to introduce you to Tasha Wilder.
Hi Tasha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a passion to help and serve others, however it would be remiss of me to say that I have always had a goal to become a mental health counselor. As a little girl growing up, I always dreamed of becoming a lawyer, but life has a way of taking you down a different path. My love for being the mental health counselor that I am today started out as simply wanting a career change. I decided to pursue my master’s degree in counseling and psychology through the encouragement of a longtime friend. After pursuing my degree, I took several jobs in which I had the privilege of working with different demographics (foster care, adolescents, adults, and children). The excitement to see others’ minds being renewed and lives being changed through therapy is what drew me to love counseling. However, the experience of working with companies that did not value their employees and the pain of seeing the companies being more money hungry, than they were focused on changing lives, became too much. Therefore, I decided to open my own private practice in which I knew I could set the standards, values, and morals of my company, while still serving my clients and providing a safe space for them. This is how my baby, Purpose Place Counseling, LLC was born and still thriving today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey to becoming a Licensed Counselor and opening a private practice definitely has not come without struggles. There have been several times along the journey in which I’ve questioned whether or not it was the right path. To become a Licensed Counselor, you have to pass a National Certification exam— let’s just say it took me a total of three tries to finally pass. Before the third attempt, I told myself that if I did not pass, I was not going to pursue counseling. Today, looking back, I am so grateful to have passed! Other struggles have consisted of enduring manipulation being taken for granted by other companies, including a business partner that I trusted prior to developing my own company.
Furthermore, due to the nature of running a business focused on mental health, it is extremely difficult for me at times— both mentally and emotionally. Mentally, I want to make sure that I am serving my clientele in the most effective and efficient way. The thought that is constantly at the forefront of my mind is, “Tasha this is about people’s lives and them becoming mentally well, don’t mess them up.” I’ve learned that this isn’t a bad thought but a thought that needs balance— one of humility and a sound mind. Emotionally, the job responsibility can be draining. I have to make sure I don’t wear the emotions of every situation and problem that comes with being a listening ear for each of my clients. Therefore, I have to fight to make sure that I tend to my own self-care and know when to take a break to rejuvenate and renew my own mind.
We’ve been impressed with Purpose Place, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

What makes you happy?
Growing, learning, and activating is what makes me happy. In other words, knowing that life will not always be a life of “cupcakes and strawberries” but a life that consists of trials, struggles, disappointments, and sometimes setbacks. However, the power is in knowing that these hardships can be overcome and conquered with a mindset that says, “Although this is what it looks like, this is not really what it is. My mind and my perspective align with my ability to grow, mature, and pull something good out of a bad situation”. Happiness is having a sense of self, identity, and purpose. When you know who you are and what direction you want to GROW in, your mind becomes clearer, thus allowing you to respond to you can have negative people and situations both mentally and emotionally in a healthy non-toxic manner. I can take the life lessons and activate a mindset that pushes me into a state of happiness and not a state of depression and/or anxiety.
