Rising Stars: Meet Beth Hughes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Hughes.

Beth Hughes

Hi Beth, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
An “a-ha moment” hit me at my kitchen sink nearly nine years ago. Little Light Co. was the response to me needing to turn my little light back on inside of me. The desire to create and shine for myself and for my community and to no longer sit in the darkness. Seven scents inspired by the South was born in Athens, Georgia in the Spring of 2015. Beginning with a French lavender candle called Lavender & Lace, inspired by both my grandmothers, we now have ten signature scents, aromatherapy mists, and bath salts in our apothecary line. The recipes have remained the same and are all-natural holistic healing tools. We pride ourselves on clean, hypoallergenic products. That grew from personal desire and lack of ethical, healthy products available from the wellness industry.

I left 16 years of corporate American behind in early 2018 to step into entrepreneurship, and it was the best decision I have ever made. Not knowing at the time she left her marketing director position, she was expecting. Her son Heywood is now one of her more popular woodland scents. I began to chip away at the little studio in my backyard, expanding the brand, engaging in more retail relationships, and growing my extensive Collaboration clientele.

Today, we sell online http://www.littlelightco.com/ to over 50 retail locations in the Southeast and partner with over 20 businesses ranging from Terrapin Beer Co., Real Estate Firms, Non-Profits, and the Ritz Carlton. Corporate gifting and wedding candles have grown since the days of the kitchen sink in 2015 as well.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well, when you play with fire, you are going to get burned 😉

We have had our share of supply chain shortages, delays up to six months or more, crippling our inventory and bottom line. The Red & Black at UGA even covered LLC as a small business struggling with fulfillment issues during 2021 – 2022.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an all-natural Apothecary artisan.

I specialize in products intimately attached to my journey and story. This is my life in jars. Every product is my family story, my place, my history, and a part of me.

That’s the esoteric part I suppose, how I can take the energy of an essential oil and aroma and attached it to an emotion, the something real and create a clean and classic wellness tool for your home. These organic soy candles, bath soaks, and sprays are products you can feel the love and energy I have hand-poured into each one. From purchasing from a small female-owned business to unpacking them at home, I consistently hear how they make people FEEL. It is what keeps blending and pouring almost a decade later.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
WILD and FREE.

And always deeply spiritual. I have always wanted to put things in jars, tinker with bottles, and find an emotional connection.
