Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristy Mathews.
Hi Cristy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up doing hair as a family/community stylist; for years, I had no desire to be a stylist. When I graduated high school in 2002, I attempted college at the University of Southern MS and changed my major three times within two years. However, as years passed, no matter how much I tried to avoid becoming a stylist, I still was the community backyard beautician. In Oct. of 2010, I decided to pursue cosmetology school at Virginia College in Mobile, Ala. While in the program, I discovered I was running from my passion. I have now been a cosmetologist for over ten years. In 2018, I became a certified hair replacement specialist. The urge to learn more about scalp care and hair loss grew even more. I decided to take my education further and became a hair loss practitioner. Once I discovered I suffered from my own forms of alopecia, my drive turned to an obsession. In 2019, I continued my education in Trichology and obtained my certification of Trichology in Sept 2019. My dedication grew more and more to be a safe space for those suffering from different forms of alopecia. Within two years, I opened my very own location, Like A Lotus Hair Rehab in Hattiesburg, MS, and created an herbal tea solutions company, Tea’d Up. This company derived from a tisane I created (Quaran’Tea) that went viral. In memory of my mom, I then started a non-profit named Hair of Hope that provides or transforms units for those on a hair loss journey due to chemotherapy or scarring alopecia.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This journey has had many peaks and valleys. From losing my mom to pancreatic cancer in 2020 back to me losing my hair again. I am also a single mom of three handsome young men. No matter the valleys, God shined light in many of my dark places.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Like A Lotus Hair Rehab LLC?
I service those with scalp issues and hair loss as a focal point. I also do full-service salon services. My goal is to provide help to get to the root cause of scalp issues. At my hair rehab, I take a holistic approach to solutions.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Along this journey, I have learned that 25% of healing is in the mind.
