Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean “BeLcHez” Cort. He will share his story with us below :
A father first and foremost, a community activist, a visual artist, a garment designer, and an educator for inner-city schools. Who has been commissioned by brands like Nike and Adidas for several projects within the past ten years. Directly collaborating with musicians like Nas, Lauren Hill, and Swiss Beats. He takes great satisfaction in his contribution to this Harlem neighborhood. His desire to contribute through service within NYC schools and his annual givebacks, his heart for the people.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road by any stretch of the imagination, but it has been a necessary road that I had to travel in order to be right where I am. I think the biggest learning curve that I struggled with was learning to treat my creativity like a business, not a hustle.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a socially, conscious artist, simply put if it’s happening in the world around me, I Portrait in my artwork The one piece of artwork that I’m most proud of is the Black Gates project that I did with Adidas in my neighborhood for my neighborhood. It was a multi-story Basketball Court that adorned powerful affirmations that could be seen from the window of the project buildings. I believe it says me apart from others is the fact that I have been a teacher for over 15 years and an artist, my whole life.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Every time I create a piece of artwork, I feel like I’m taking a risk. The reason being is my art usually has a very abrasive message. Another major risk is opening up a manufacturing factory in Pakistan without even meeting my partner.
