Daily Inspiration: Meet Chigusa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chigusa.

Chigusa

Hi Chigusa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born and raised in sunny Miami/Broward, Florida, I grew up in a suburban single-parent household, unlike most of my contemporaries. Music wasn’t necessarily a focus point at home, but when my mother decided to enroll me in piano lessons, she unknowingly kickstarted an obsession within me that would prevail to this day. That obsession being the determination to become one of the the most influential artists of my generation. When I was 16, I was blessed enough to be gifted the MASCHINE Mk 2 for Christmas, a music production suite and Midi pad. For the next nine years, I would be locked in whatever room I was currently living in, obsessing over the finest details in the pursuit of pushing the envelope and becoming one of the greats.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Is it ever? One of the biggest lessons I’ve had to learn is that anything great takes sacrifice, hard work, and suffering to a degree, so I try not to over-dramatize my struggles because we all go through it.

That being said, probably the biggest challenge that turned into one of the biggest blessings was the lack of acceptance from my peers. Early on (and still to this day, really), nobody was really messing with my production. I would send beats to people, and nobody would ever actually want to collaborate. This went on for years until one day in 2019, I downloaded Auto-tune and decided to try recording myself. Those early demos were pretty bad vocally, but you can still hear the passion shining through, and after years of practicing, I’ve gotten substantially better as a singer and can hold my own on a record. While I still sometimes feel salty about not being accepted by those around me, it was an experience that pushed me into the next of my artistry and I’m grateful for it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a Music Producer and Singer-Songwriter focused on delivering futuristic sounds and aesthetics. Music production is definitely my bread and butter. I’ve been producing for 9+ years now, and people know me for my intense attention to detail in the music. I pride myself heavy on being one of a kind, my goal with being an artist is to be a trendsetter, someone who paves the way for people to follow suit because all of my idols are those kinds of artists. People Like Kanye West, Radiohead, Tyler the Creator, Donald Glover, Dr.Dre, Tame Impala etc.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The combination of my creativity, originality, and self-awareness. I don’t have the best equipment, I’m not the greatest singer, I’m not even a good rapper. I know an abundance of people who outshine me In natural talent and resources, but my end products come out better than most of my contemporaries because I have vision. I know what sounds good, I study good music on why its good. I study bad music and why it’s bad. I can be honest with myself when something I do is not good which is a skill a surprising amount of people don’t have. For that reason I’m always pushing to be better, even when it’s good, I work till it’s great.
