Today we’d like to introduce you to Marshall Mabry.
Hi Marshall, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have worked in education for the last 17 years in both k12 and higher education. While being in the classroom, I found my passion for counseling, and I started taking classes on diversity, inclusion, and counseling youth & young adults. My book is a story about a young boy who is seen as being weird but in all actuality has Autism. I have found that often times children of color aren’t always represented when it comes to stories of Autism. Because of the stigma of Autism in the African American community who are often times misrepresented, misdiagnosed and misrepresented in the conversations about the emotional and educational well-being of our children.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the struggles with being an advocate of BIPOC(black, indigenous, people of color) is getting people to open up about their stories without being seen as different. Too often, when it comes to health disparities within our country, everyone wants to be seen as “normal”; therefore, they don’t speak about their physical and emotional struggles. The purpose of my book was to tell the story of an underserved community that needs to be represented, and that is young black boys. Giving a voice to young black boys is my passion in life.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Mental Health Counselor as well as a school administrator. What sets me apart from others is that I am also a minister with 26 years of gospel experience. As a father, minister, administrator, and clinician. I am able to pull from different wellsprings in order to assist those in need. I have two Bachelor’s degrees (Biblical Studies & Organizational Leadership), Masters (Administration) Ph.D. in Christian Counseling
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My biggest supports are my wife, Tausha, and our children. My goal every day is to ” serve this present age, my calling to fulfill” and to live a life so that my family can be proud of me.
