Today we’d like to introduce you to Zuri Pryor-Graves.
Hi Zuri, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Zuri Pryor-Graves, a boundary-pushing force and a catalyst for change at the intersection of sexuality, mental health, and entertainment. My journey, rich with diverse experiences and woven with a relentless pursuit of authenticity, has shaped me into a multifaceted advocate and practitioner committed to igniting change, challenging societal norms, and fostering empowerment.
Born in New York City and raised in the heart of Roanoke, VA, I grew up navigating spaces where I was often “the only one in the room.” As an only child raised by a tenacious single mother, I learned early on the value of forging my own path and embracing my uniqueness. Despite often being “the only___” in most rooms I am in, I refused to be confined by stereotypes or limitations, instead, learning the value of my perseverance, I used my identity as a catalyst for growth and change.
Armed with degrees in Social Work and Education, and currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Psychology, I’ve cultivated a diverse skill set that spans the realms of intimacy coordination, sex therapy, and mental health advocacy. As a certified intimacy coordinator by SAG-AFTRA and Intimacy Coordinators and Directors International, I am at the forefront of pioneering change within the entertainment industry. I provide consultation and support to productions across various platforms, including HBO, BET, STARZ, AMC, FX, Hulu, Netflix, and more. I specialize in creating safe, respectful, and authentic spaces for intimate scenes on screen, while my background in therapy equips me with the tools to support individuals and couples on their journey toward sexual well-being and empowerment.
Beyond my professional endeavors, I am deeply committed to amplifying underrepresented voices and challenging systemic barriers to inclusivity and equality. I am also committed to advocacy and education surrounding these issues. As a Black, queer woman, I recognize the importance of authentic representation and strive to use my platform to uplift marginalized communities and voices to spark meaningful change.
Prior to diving into this dynamic arena, I proudly joined the sisterhood of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and earned my stripes at Howard University before pursuing two master’s degrees in human sexuality from Widener University. Beyond my professional pursuits, I find solace and joy in the adrenaline rush of roller derby & aggressive skating, motorcycling, coaching aspiring athletes, and formerly spinning tracks as a weekend DJ. And let’s not forget my love for all things culinary and canine – a true foodie, chef, and puppy enthusiast at heart.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Looking back on my journey, I can confidently say that it has been far from easy or smooth. Like any path marked by passion and purpose, it has been riddled with challenges and invaluable lessons that have shaped me into the person I am today.
One of the most significant challenges I faced was navigating spaces where I often stood alone. As the only Black girl in my grade for 14 years, I constantly grappled with feelings of isolation and the pressure to conform to societal expectations. However, I refused to let these challenges define me. Instead, I embraced my uniqueness as a source of strength and resilience, using it as a catalyst for growth and change.
Another challenge I encountered was breaking into the entertainment industry, particularly in roles such as intimacy coordination where diversity and representation are still lacking. As a Black, queer woman, I faced barriers and biases that often made it difficult to be taken seriously in these spaces. However, I refused to let these obstacles deter me from pursuing my passions. Instead, I used them as fuel to advocate for greater inclusivity and representation within the industry.
Throughout my journey, I’ve learned invaluable lessons about the power of perseverance, authenticity, and resilience. I’ve learned that success is not always linear and that setbacks and failures are simply opportunities for growth and learning. I’ve learned the importance of staying true to myself and my values, even in the face of adversity. And perhaps most importantly, I’ve learned that true change and empowerment require collective action and a commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices.
In retrospect, I wouldn’t trade the challenges and struggles I’ve faced for anything. They have shaped me into the person I am today and have equipped me with the tools and resilience necessary to make a meaningful impact in the world. While my journey may not have been easy or smooth, it has been incredibly rewarding, and I am grateful for every obstacle and triumph along the way.
In addition to my role as an intimacy coordinator, I proudly wear the hats of a licensed sex therapist and mental health professional. My mission? Providing unwavering support and guidance to individuals and couples embarking on their journey toward sexual well-being and empowerment. What sets me apart in this realm? It’s my unwavering commitment to inclusivity and authenticity. As a Black, queer woman, I bring a uniquely rich perspective to my practice, ensuring that every client, regardless of background, feels truly seen, heard, and valued.
But there’s more to my toolkit than just therapy. I’ve delved deep into the intricacies of on-screen movement and choreography, anti-harassment practices, and even the design of genital prosthetics. Plus, I’ve honed skills in mediation, conflict resolution, trauma work, and LGBTQ support. Throw in my certifications in gender, sexuality, race, and disability competency, along with Mental Health First Aid training, and you’ve got a comprehensive support system ready to tackle any challenge.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Absolutely. As an intimacy coordinator, sex therapist, and mental health advocate, my work revolves around fostering positive change and empowerment within the entertainment industry and beyond.
One aspect of my work involves serving as an intimacy coordinator, where I specialize in creating safe, respectful, and authentic portrayals of intimacy on screen. Certified by SAG-AFTRA and Intimacy Coordinators and Directors International, I orchestrate spaces where actors can explore intimate scenes with confidence and dignity. What sets me apart in this role is my unique background in sex therapy and mental health advocacy, which allows me to approach intimacy coordination with a deep understanding of the emotional and psychological aspects involved.
What truly distinguishes me is my holistic approach to sexuality, mental health, and entertainment. By seamlessly integrating my expertise in intimacy coordination, sex therapy, and mental health advocacy, I offer a one-stop shop for individuals and productions alike. My driving force? A deep-seated dedication to authenticity, inclusivity, and empowerment. It’s this passion that propels me forward, setting me apart as a fervent advocate and practitioner in my field.
Reflecting on my journey, I’m most proud of my unwavering faith – a belief in something even when its reality seemed uncertain. When I embarked on this path as an intimacy coordinator, it was uncharted territory, with no clear roadmap in sight. But I saw the potential, the need, and the opportunity for growth. I took the leap, fully invested, and never looked back. Today, as the role continues to evolve and gain recognition, I’m humbled and grateful to have been part of its inception, paving the way for a more inclusive and empowering future in the entertainment industry.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me? Keeping people safe.
Safety forms the bedrock of everything we do—it’s the foundation upon which trust, growth, and empowerment are built. When individuals feel safe, they can fully engage in the process of healing, learning, and self-discovery. As a practitioner in the fields of sexuality, mental health, and entertainment, ensuring the safety and well-being of those I serve is not just a priority—it’s a moral imperative.
My passion lies in working closely with new actors, particularly those from marginalized communities. I’m driven to empower them with knowledge about their rights and expectations regarding intimacy on screen. Many newcomers, especially actors of color, are vulnerable to exploitation due to a lack of understanding about industry standards and boundaries. It’s heartbreaking to witness individuals being taken advantage of simply because they lack awareness.
That’s why I’m committed to equipping actors with the tools they need to advocate for themselves, whether or not an intimacy coordinator is present on set. I want to empower them to navigate the often manipulative and hierarchical landscape of the TV and film industry. My goal is to provide them with a script, so to speak, that outlines their rights and responsibilities, enabling them to assert their boundaries confidently.
Moreover, I aim to challenge the pervasive “I hurt you because I was hurt” mentality that perpetuates cycles of harm. By fostering a culture of accountability and compassion, I believe we can create a safer and more supportive environment for everyone involved in the entertainment industry. It’s not just about protecting individuals—it’s about dismantling harmful power dynamics and fostering a culture of mutual respect and understanding.
