Meet Dr. Ecclesia Savage of Anchored Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Ecclesia Savage.

Ecclesia Savage

Hi Dr. Ecclesia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Georgia. I am the eldest of 5 siblings, I grew up in a single-parent household with my mother.

I saw how she struggled to give us everything we needed and the toll it took on her. I also began to understand the responsibility of motherhood after I had my son as a sophomore in college. I attended GA State University and earned my BA in Sociology while raising my son. I went back to school and obtained my MS in Mental Health Counseling. I completed both degrees while being a single parent and working full-time.

During that time, I also started a non-profit, Our Souls 2 Keep, Inc. specifically to support young girls and women with their mental health. We have since grown to also provide resources to people who are experiencing homelessness. In 2019, I started my private practice specializing in Black women’s issues. I returned to graduate school and earned my PhD in Counseling Psychology. The road has not been easy, from sleep deprivation to microaggressions, I have experienced a lot.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a single mother, raising a Black son, oftentimes being 1 of few Black students in my program- it has NOT been easy. However, every experience I have had has made me who I am.

The last year of graduate school was the worst year of my life. I had to move out of state for an internship and due to the area I decided to let my son stay with his father so he could stay in GA.

During that year, I had two miscarriages and my grandmother, my matriarch passed away. In addition to that, I was being harassed by a supervisor and had to file a grievance.
