Exploring Life & Business with Maria Sarmiento of Sarmiento Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Sarmiento.

Maria Sarmiento

Hi Maria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a Colombian Latina artist who moved to Atlanta 30 years ago to pursue a Master’s in Sculpture at Georgia State University and has been teaching art at college level as well as other institutions. I wrote in Voyage Atlanta before, and this is my life update.

In the vast canvas of life, I found myself a woman in her fifties, divorced at a crossroads, faced with the opportunity to start anew. As an artist, this journey is not just about physically relocating from Atlanta to Ellijay in the north Georgia mountains, but also about rediscovering my creative voice and finding inspiration in the unexplored corners of these new surroundings. Living alone becomes both liberating and challenging for me. In solitude, I have found space for introspection, self-reflection, and creativity.

Teaching art has been and continues to be an integral part of my journey. Sharing my knowledge and experiences with others not only enriched their lives but also brought immense fulfillment to mine. I still teach at the Spruill Center for the Arts in Dunwoody and at Gilmer Arts in Ellijay GA where I am part of the board of directors. Creating community has been important to me and I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of this town and all the visitors that come to Ellijay and enjoy the arts as well.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life is a journey filled with unexpected challenges, and as an artist, you have certainly experienced your fair share. Navigating the complexities of living alone, moving your art studio, and building a new workshop, takes incredible resilience. As a woman in her 50s who is self-employed and divorced, I have faced unique obstacles along the way.

The ever-increasing cost of health insurance adds to the complexity of the situation. Trying to make enough income through teaching can be daunting, as it is difficult to predict how much money you will make. But amidst these challenges lie opportunities for growth and transformation. Remember that every setback is an opportunity for a comeback. Embracing the uncertainty shaped you into a strong and determined individual.

The unwavering passion for your art moves you forward. Learning to trust in your abilities and know that every step you take brings you closer to realizing your dreams. The self-doubt is around every corner, learning to trust your instinct makes you capable of overcoming any obstacle that comes your way. Keep moving forward fearlessly, for the challenges you face today will only strengthen the artist within you tomorrow.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Life as an artist can be a beautiful journey filled with creativity and self-expression. However, it also comes with its fair share of challenges. From managing your own business to participating in exhibitions, marketing your work, teaching classes, and wearing many hats – being an artist means embracing a diverse range of responsibilities.

As a small business owner in the art industry, you understand the importance of showcasing your creations at exhibitions and events. These platforms not only allow you to connect with potential buyers but also provide an opportunity to network with fellow artists and gain exposure to your unique style.

Teaching is another avenue that can bring both fulfillment and extra income to your artistic journey. Sharing your skills and knowledge with others not only helps aspiring artists hone their craft but also generates a sense of community within the art world.

Building a strong online presence through a well-designed website can be instrumental in reaching a wider audience. It enables you to showcase your artwork, promote upcoming classes or workshops, and even sell your pieces online – opening up new avenues for passive income.

Being the sole employee of your small business requires you to juggle various tasks such as creating artwork, managing finances, marketing strategies, and maintaining an online presence. It’s no easy feat! But remember that every challenge is an opportunity for growth.

As a Latina woman in the art industry, you are breaking barriers and inspiring others through your passion and dedication. Your determination serves as a shining example for aspiring artists from all backgrounds.

Navigating financial stability as an artist can be unpredictable at times. The fluctuating nature of income makes it difficult to gauge how much money you will make from teaching or selling artwork. However, by staying proactive in finding new opportunities, diversifying revenue streams through online classes or workshops, and continuously honing your skills – you can strive toward financial success while doing what you love. I offer private art lessons, fabrication, and commissions of a variety of materials and techniques.

Remember that building a successful art business takes time and perseverance. Embrace each challenge as an opportunity to grow and learn. Stay true to your artistic vision, and let your passion shine through every brushstroke, mosaic piece, or welding project. Your unique journey as an artist is an inspiration to us all.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
When it comes to success, whether it is financial or fulfilling your passion, there is one quality or characteristic that stands out above all others – and that is perseverance.

Perseverance is the unwavering commitment to keep going, even in the face of challenges and setbacks. It is the ability to stay focused on your goals and push through obstacles with determination and resilience.

Success is not always easy or immediate. It requires hard work, and dedication, and often involves taking risks. But those who persevere are the ones who ultimately achieve their dreams. You need to be flexible and sometimes get other jobs to support your business and livelihood and it is okay to do so.

Whether you are striving for financial success or pursuing your passion, remember that setbacks are just stepping stones on the path to greatness. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and learn from each experience.

Stay motivated, stay positive, and never give up on what you truly desire. With perseverance as your guiding light, you can overcome any obstacle and achieve the success you envision. So keep pushing forward, because your dreams are worth fighting for!
