Conversations with Jermaine Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jermaine Thompson.

Jermaine Thompson

Hi Jermaine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your back story.
As a young child at the age of 7, I realized I was infatuated with hair. I grew up across the street from a salon. I always loved going with my mother and grandmother as they would get their hair done so much, I would go hang out in the salon after school and during the summertime.

At the time “Trollz” dolls were a very popular thing to have as a kid, I had plenty of them along with many other dolls that played the role of my clients. I remember being teased so much by kids and adults for being a boy playing with dolls. But it was truly my grandmother who saw the love I had for hair to encourage me not to ever worry about what people say, do what I love to do, and also how women love for men to do their hair.

So, after high school graduation, I continued my education at Middle Georgia College for business administration. With the eagerness to obtain my cosmetology license, I then moved to Atlanta, GA where I attended Empire Beauty School located in Dunwoody. I graduated with my Master’s Cosmetology License in 2011. From there, I worked in salons in different areas of Atlanta gaining clientele and participating in fashion and hair shows including Bronner Brothers, Georgia Peach Fashion Week, and Haute Atlanta Fashion Week. I’ve also won many competitions throughout Georgia and South Carolina.

Through networking, I’ve been blessed to work with many celebrity clients such as “Teyana Taylor, Jennifer Holiday, Regina Love, Brely Evan, RuPaul Drag Race All-Star” “Lalari” and “Angeria Van Michaels”. I’ve also had the pleasure of being a part of the glam team for the motion picture “Stalked Within” featured on BET. I’ve also had my work featured in many music videos and shows on VHI, OLAY commercials, BET, and Spotify,

What I enjoy most about my career, is the fact that I get to travel around the world from the US to the UK doing what I love to do!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been always smooth. There were times in my life when I almost threw in the towel and quit when life got rough. At times it would get so bad I would question my passion and purpose.

After 2019 when I lost both of my parents a week apart due to sickness, for some time I lost a lot of fire and drive that was once there. I felt like my world had turned completely upside down, I lost my biggest cheerleader… my mother.

Without her, I had to find a way to get the strength to keep going and make her proud by continuing life with my head up, doing what I love, and doing what she loved to see me do.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Because I’m a Master Cosmetologist I perform most of the services offered under the beauty umbrella such as hair cutting, hair coloring, extensions, custom wigs, natural hairstyles & hair care, make-up, and facials.

I specialize in Haircutting and creative wigs. I’m most known for my bobs and my creative fantasy hair pieces. I’m most proud of my accomplishments thus far, and the fact that I am living my dream as a traveling stylist. I’ve been able to go outside the country to London, UK to do what I love to do, hair. Such a blessing!

I believe what sets me apart from others would have to be my creativity, ambition, and imagination which helps me to be such a phenomenal visionary.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I have to give credit to God of course for my life and the talent he blessed me with. My mother and grandmother for loving, supporting, and encouraging me to do what I love, and love doing it no matter what,

I also would love to give credit to someone who has seen the greatness in me and played a big part in guiding me in the right direction when it comes to being a beauty professional, my mentor JosCynthia Mason.
