Rising Stars: Meet Steve Chancellor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Chancellor

Stephen Hassan

Hi Steve, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
šahid is my brand name but pronounced shaheed. In English, this Arabic word translates to martyr. I’ve designed and made clothing in the past but after the death of a grandparent, I decided to move to Sudan. During Ramadan of 2021, there was a protest, and a few university students lost their lives.

There is never any media conversation about the turmoil in Sudan. My mother’s mother was one of the most important people in my life. After time & deep thought in the village, I decided to sail ship with šahid, trying to uplift marginalized voices across the globe.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggles that come with any start-up. Marketing, budgeting, turnaround. šahid is run by one investor. “The struggle” is building the business, as is any business but I want to do this. If you want something, you will do whatever you want to get it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in thought provocation, converted into tangibility.

Everything I ever accomplished or continue to do began as an idea. The idea begins the cycle. I brainstorm, make it believable for myself, and begin the process of making it tangible for others.

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
My advice to others? Do it if you have a thought, make it sensible. Create it. The time you’re factoring in will pass by with or without you. Use it wisely.
