Hidden Gems: Meet Jamie Johnson of DRILLS TO DREAMS

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Johnson.

Hi Jamie, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed with your story and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Jamie Johnson. I graduated college in 2019 where I was a 2-time all-American in basketball despite the all-American status, I had no offers or agent. Started drills to dreams on YouTube to document my journey and inspire others after 2.5 years got my first offer in Georgia but was cut 3 months later came home for one month and went to Mexico on my second contract. 

Got cut 4 months later. Got to see the business side of the sport and decided to change the route. Came across GOD IS DOPE and WRLDINVSN and was inspired by how they were positive and stable in their community and wanted to do the same. DRILLS TO DREAMS wants to inspire others and let them know that their DREAMS are possible with hard work. 

We still have a YouTube channel where we talk to different business owners who have overcome adversity to pursue their DREAMS. Our Mission is to empower the community through unique design, fostering a belief in the strength of hard work, and enabling individuals to fulfill and pursue their dreams. We now have a kiosk open at St. Matthews Mall in Louisville, KY. 

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a journey, definitely some struggling. I would say some challenges business-wise have been when I was at a kiosk with less traffic, trying to make sales, and getting my story out there. 

Another challenge in the beginning was understanding different things in the clothing brand space like keeping up with inventory and how to properly get your numbers right. 

As you know, we’re big fans of DRILLS TO DREAMS. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
DRILLS TO DREAMS is a clothing brand made in Louisville KY, right now we are the brand that is up and coming in the city. 

The thing that sets us apart is we can connect with all our customers because we have been in their shoes and are still in their shoes chasing our dreams to build a community of DREAMERS. We know what it’s like to have a DREAM or goal and have our hard work pay off. 

Our number one sellers early in the brand are our “DREAM SERIES” hats and our “Believe” tee. We want the readers to know that their DREAMS are possible with hard work. 

Networking and finding a mentor can have a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
For sure, the best thing we did for the brand was get mentorship, we were able to speed up the process on a lot of things by being able to ask people who have been in our shoes already. 

There are a lot of free games on the internet but it’s different when you can talk in person and build relationships with your mentors. My advice would be to use social media productively by finding people doing what you’re interested in on a higher level and connecting with them via email, direct messaging, or a conference.
