Today we’d like to introduce you to Jozaida Morris.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Being a Dominican Afro-Latina woman, beauty has always been an art in my culture. For many Dominican women, it’s passed on from generation to generation, the availability to make a living off cosmetology. Most of us are taught young how to do hair, nails, makeup, etc.
So, I’ve always been in salon environments and decided very young that this would be the path for me. Without friends and family supporting me at the beginning of my journey I wouldn’t have got the opportunity to take models at the beginning and grow my career to what it has become today!
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road for me has been filled with many potholes, but none that I allowed to stop my growth. Many obstacles were thrown at me such as the loss of my father, the loss of my close aunt, the loss of all grandparents & 2 car accidents that required at least 5 months of physical therapy.
Being 13-18 at the time the path was made mentally more difficult. However, with the support of my long-term partner and family, I was able to get through these hard patches in life, remaining focused on my career, graduating high school at 17, a year earlier & graduating cosmetology school by 21.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in braiding, extensions, hair coloring, cutting, natural hair, and makeup. I’m known mostly as a versatile natural hair stylist & makeup artist. I am most proud of the growth that I have seen in the quality of my services as the years go by.
My work is very clean & I know what sets me apart from others is the quality of the services I provide & the versatility of my work. My clients know I genuinely care about their well-being, and the healthiness of their hair/skin as well.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
With many of my clients being older, professionalism is the most important to my success.
Being a young entrepreneur, people tend to not take you seriously so putting in the work and also keeping it professional shows how serious you are about your craft.
