I’ve always loved books. As a child, my parents, especially my mom, a New Orleans public school teacher, instilled in me the power of reading. While working at a large bookstore chain, I saw a young boy struggling to choose a book for summer reading. He chose the shortest book, unaware it was the most challenging! We discussed his interests and found a different, engaging book he devoured. He was now a reader.
His life forever changed because of one book. Seeing his excitement solidified my mission: to help every child fall in love with reading. Imagine if every child loved reading. Books are portals to the imagination, boosting academic performance, supporting mental well-being, and providing skills for lifelong success. Recent studies highlight the profound impact of nurturing a deep love for reading in children. Yet, many parents feel lost amidst conflicting advice and endless book options, struggling to cultivate this love at home. Upon realizing the gap between home and school, particularly the lack of support for fostering a love of reading, we created Page Turner. As a parent, I see firsthand how challenging it can be to face nightly battles and what feels like endless frustrations. Page Turner was born from that need. This research-backed program equips you with proven strategies to spark curiosity, build confidence, and unlock the magic of storytelling. Starting any new venture has its share of hurdles. Bon Temps Books presented unique challenges, but overcoming them has given us a clear insight into what sets us apart and why we’re valuable. One challenge was establishing Bon Temps Books as a unique entity in a saturated market. Our approach is different. Unlike conventional bookstores or tutoring services, we offer a unique combination of personalized book recommendations and a virtual program to empower families to cultivate a love of reading together.
While individual tutoring exists, our parent-driven approach empowers families to actively participate in their child’s reading journey, fostering stronger bonds and ensuring lasting results. Understanding that busy schedules can be a real challenge for families, we also work with families to find ways to make our program accessible and flexible, even for parents with limited time. Our goal is to support families in finding ways to connect with their children through reading, regardless of their circumstances, through both our personalized recommendations and flexible program. It was a hard sell initially.
Balancing work and family life is a constant struggle for many, and convincing them to add what feels like another “to-do” often feels daunting. However, I know the transformative power of reading and its positive impact on parents and children. So, I doubled my outreach, highlighting the benefits beyond the obvious. I explain how a love of reading increases their child’s science and math scores, not just reading. It also boosts communication skills and mental health and strengthens parent-child bonds. These are all necessary for the next generation of leaders.
Overcoming these challenges wasn’t easy, but it was incredibly gratifying. Today, Bon Temps is thriving, with a growing community of families experiencing the joy of reading together. Seeing the positive impact on children’s literacy and the stronger parent-child bonds forged through shared stories reinforces why I started Bon Temps in the first place. It’s a testament to the power of belief, perseverance, and a unique approach to fostering a love of reading.
