Ty Xavier Turner

Hi Ty, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Born in the creative crucible of Hartford, Connecticut, my path wasn’t always focused on the still image. Raised by my grandmother and the eldest of seven, a sense of responsibility and storytelling was instilled early. Drawn to the world of motion pictures, I originally pursued a career in movie directing. But fate, as it often does, had other plans.

I found an enduring love for photography at the Art Institute of Atlanta. The artistry of crafting a single, potent frame truly resonated. My knack for building scenes from any inspiration ignited a passion within. Each photo was a visual story sculpted from raw imagination.

This drive propelled me to work with publications, companies, and brands, leaving my distinctive mark on countless projects. No challenge was too daring. Whether it was sourcing bales of straw for a rustic country shoot or orchestrating complex scenes with suspended models, flowing water, and choreographed fire, my dedication to “making it happen” became a hallmark.

My relentless work ethic and artistic vision define me. My background grants me a unique understanding of narrative structure. With each shutter click, I capture stories frozen in time, small worlds built with meticulous care and boundless creativity.

A few years ago, I wanted to make sure I passed along my knowledge. I nurtured and mentored two great photographers, Royce Pearson and Christian Powell. They’ve made me so proud. As I grow and age, I’ve found more appreciation for taking time for myself with almost 20 years of photography. I’ve enjoyed my relaxation and reflection before jumping back into the creative pool.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I had many obstacles stacked against me when I started. I came into photography with other great artists with more knowledge and backing to them with more time.

I had to trust in my work and my style. The risk I’d take to make an image happen was my niche and what spotlighted my skill and talent.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in what I call unique creative abstract editorial. Even the simplest of images has a meaning or story within it. I remember playing video games and toys to make up my world when I was a child. I can create that world in photography, and it stands the test of time.

I’ve created many projects in my career and am most proud of myself. I’ve always had people who supported me, but I did this myself. I hustled and pushed to have my storytelling be seen. I feel like that’s what sets me apart from others. What goes on in this brain to create inspiration shocks me at times.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I was a magazine junky. Lol. If it was high fashion, it was my choice of publication. High fashion fit my style, making it more acceptable to the viewer in my younger years.
