Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kyungsun Choi.
Hi Kyungsun, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. Before we get into specifics, could you briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a pianist, I possess a versatile skill set that spans a broad spectrum of performance styles, from captivating solo recitals to the art of ensemble accompaniment. While many musicians specialize in one particular format, whether as a soloist or an accompanist, I find fulfillment in embracing both avenues of expression. Moreover, music is an invaluable tool for communication and interaction with people from all different backgrounds.
Trained initially as a soloist, I’ve had the privilege of gracing numerous stages worldwide with the power and emotion of my performances. Showcasing my talents as a soloist with esteemed orchestras such as the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Sierra Vista Symphony Orchestra, and Tucson Repertory Orchestra has been a cornerstone of my artistic journey, leaving an indelible mark on both myself and my audiences.
Yet, beyond the realm of solo performance lies a world of collaborative artistry that I find equally captivating. There’s an unparalleled joy in merging my musical voice with others, creating harmonies that transcend the capabilities of any single instrument. Whether accompanying choirs, instrumentalists, or fellow musicians in chamber ensembles, I revel in the shared experience of crafting something extraordinary together. Along this line, the past year saw the inception of the “Takuma Trio,” a musical endeavor I founded alongside violinist Toru Tagawa and cellist Robert Marshall.
Serving as a pianist for opera rehearsals has further broadened my musical horizons. I’ve had the privilege of interpreting a spectrum of operatic works, from the timeless classics of Mozart and Puccini to the contemporary compositions of Britten and Sondheim. My involvement extends beyond university productions, encompassing engagements with esteemed opera companies such as the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra and Southern Arizona Opera Guilds.
In addition to my role as a pianist, I am a devoted family man, blessed with a wife and daughter currently pursuing her studies in California. Despite a demanding schedule of approximately 20 concerts annually, I find immense joy in sharing my passion for music through private instruction, nurturing the next generation of pianists. My journey as a pianist is a testament to the transformative power of music, transcending borders and cultures while enriching lives along the way.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Indeed, time is the great equalizer; we all have the same 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For me, maximizing the usage of this time among my important values—performance, teaching, and family—is my greatest challenge. Balancing the demands of these aspects of my life requires careful planning and prioritization.
Neglecting any one of them could spell disaster, both personally and professionally. As both a performer and educator, maintaining a stellar reputation necessitates a strong sense of responsibility and dedication. I must allocate time for my student’s growth and development while also ensuring I have ample time for practice and preparation for upcoming concerts. Striking this delicate balance is essential for success in both arenas.
Recently, I welcomed a new student into my fold—an exceptionally talented and ambitious 12-year-old who has already garnered recognition in international competitions. It’s a privilege to guide her musical journey, fostering not only her piano technique but also her emotional and artistic maturity. Despite my busy concert schedule, I feel a deep responsibility towards her development and growth as a musician. Thus, finding a harmonious balance between my pursuits and her musical education is paramount.
In navigating these competing priorities, I am constantly striving to optimize my time management skills and adapt to ever-changing circumstances. By maintaining clear communication with my students and their families, as well as rigorously scheduling my own practice and teaching sessions, I endeavor to uphold the high standards of excellence expected of me as both a performer and educator. Ultimately, through this delicate balancing act, I aim to achieve personal and professional success while nurturing the next generation of musical talent.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
As an established pianist, I refuse to confine myself to a single genre or performance type, continually seeking new challenges and opportunities across a broad spectrum of musical endeavors. Whether performing as a soloist with esteemed orchestras, accompanying choirs, or lending my talents to opera rehearsals, I find joy and fulfillment in the diversity of my work.
This expansive range of experiences has afforded me invaluable insights into various music genres and performance styles, setting me apart from conventional piano instructors. Through this lens, I am uniquely equipped to recognize and cultivate my students’ diverse talents and interests, often overlooked by others.
Moreover, as an established figure in the world of piano, I consider it my duty to foster a new generation of pianists who share a genuine passion for music, instilling a deep appreciation for the art form.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I find immense joy in embarking on adventures with my family, exploring new destinations, immersing ourselves in different cultures, and indulging in delectable cuisines. This summer, I’m eagerly anticipating my participation in a chorus festival in Minneapolis, MN—a refreshing return to the Midwest after over a decade. These novel experiences serve as a wellspring of inspiration and drive, fueling my passion for music and life.
On the flip side, I truly detest rudeness. In my eyes, rudeness stems from a fundamental lack of respect and empathy toward others—a failure to embody the essence of tolerance and understanding, known as “tolérance” in French. Regardless of background or status, nobody has the right to mistreat or disrespect others. I firmly believe in the power of kindness and mutual respect, and I strive to embody these values in all my interactions.
