Today, we’d like to introduce you to Anyika Onuora.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I became a successful track and field sprinter for Team GB for almost 20 years, winning global medals at the World Championships and Olympic Games. It was amazing to compete at the highest level, competing against the best athletes in the world. After I retired in 2019, I became a People Consultant in the corporate world in one of the Big 4 and also had the amazing opportunity to write my autobiography, My Hidden Race.
The book chronicles my journey into sport as a young black girl, right through to senior level where I excelled in my sport. My time in track and field was incredible, but I also had to battle many obstacles, such as body image, sexual assault, and racism, just to name a few. I’ve been touring with my book, and having people buy my book means a lot to me. I wrote it to be an inspiration to everyone who has followed my journey, but mostly to young black girls who are constantly told no. We deserve all we’ve worked hard for. Don’t allow anyone to dim what’s already shining!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I had many struggles during my career, such as illness – I contracted Malaria 10 months before the Olympic Games and could barely walk, but I had strong people around me to aid me in my recovery. 10 months later, I was standing on the podium with my Olympic medal around my neck.
I also had some injuries but thankfully not career ending (Achilles and hamstring). During those moments of rehab and recovery, that’s when you truly understand why you started and what you want to achieve that season. I had to dig really deep but it was all worth it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Known as a global track and field medalist for Team GB, Speaker, and recent author of My Hidden Race. I’m proud of never giving up on myself even in moments of doubt, still choosing to fight even when I needed rest. I learned a lot from those challenging times.
What sets me apart is I think believe enjoy being around me. It feels as though people are often intrigued by me (or at least this is what I’m told). You can’t fake it in this life, you should always be yourself and I guess that’s what people enjoy about me.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the food, culture, and vibe – there’s something for everyone.
