Today, we’d like to introduce you to Za’kiyah Grayson.
Hi Za’kiyah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I decided I wanted to do makeup when we were in the pandemic of 2020. I always loved to do my own makeup so I decided to make it a passion. In my first year of doing makeup, I took three classes. I was taught different techniques, tips & tricks by another makeup artist who had Been doing makeup for 10 years.
I decided to take so many classes because coming into the beauty industry there always something trending or changing so taking classes with others who already is knowledgeable about what I love was a way for me to take every instructor’s technique and make it my own. I did my makeup every day or at least every other day to perfect the look that I wanted.
Then I started posting I was accepting clients and I also did a lot of people to where I would just do the makeup for no charge just so I could get my work out there and practice on different skin tones & textures. It’s definitely been a journey, and I can say it’s not easy. Especially when there is no support system behind you, or you do not have any clients, or you just don’t have confidence in yourself because you are looking at others who are in the same field and they are completely booked and you’re not.
With faith & patience, everything will come In due time. What I learned quickly was when coming into the beauty industry you can’t compare yourself to others who have been doing the same thing that you doing for 10 years or because they were in the same position they started with 0 clients as well. I’m now going on 3 years of being a makeup artist and I know that only greatness lies ahead of me.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road! You have some months where you will get zero clients and you have some months where you will only have 1 or 2 clients and then there are months where you will be overly booked.
Trying to build clients is hard at first. Learning how to market yourself & to know what audience you are targeting. Trying to find your niche & figuring out what makes you stand out from every other makeup artist.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a full-time makeup artist. I specialize in soft glam very subtle makeup I have a cosmetic brand that sells lipgloss called Zadorecosmetics. I’m known for fashion dressing up. I love clothes. I love to travel seeing the world and exploring new things makes me happy.
I’m most proud of my brand and my cosmetic line, and the reason I say is because I never gave up after all the times I wanted to. Anything you put your mind to, you can accomplish, believe in yourself. What sets me apart from others is everything I feel like I’m very unique when it comes to my creativeness & style.
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
My advice to others is just to believe in yourself no matter what. Know that if you put your mind to it and have faith, it will become a reality. There are going to be slow days, and when they are there, just prepare yourself for the busy times that are ahead. Know that we all started with zero clients know that we all start in the same position!
It’s all about how you are going to finish it! You are your brand, so promote it like that’s all you have because later down the line, that brand will take care of you. Giving up is not an option!
