Today we’d like to introduce you to Devonte Ellison.

Devonte Ellison

Hi Devonte, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My love for food began in my earliest memories, as I watched my father craft meals in the kitchen with a sense of awe and fascination. His culinary prowess instilled in me a deep admiration for the art of cooking, and I yearned to emulate his skill and creativity. Witnessing the joy that his dishes brought to others, whether through the rich flavors of barbecue or the comfort of soul food, ignited a passion within me that I knew I had to pursue. Growing up, I eagerly lent a helping hand in the kitchen, soaking in knowledge from my beautiful mother and grandmothers as they shared their expertise and passed down cherished family recipes.

During my junior year of high school, when I needed extra credits to graduate, Miss Kathy Conway, a guiding light in my academic journey, asked me a simple yet profound question: “Devonte, what do you love to do?” Without hesitation, I expressed my passion for both savoring delicious meals and dressing with style. Recognizing my genuine enthusiasm for the culinary arts, she directed me towards the home economics class. It was under her guidance that I discovered my true calling and was soon awarded scholarships that paved the way for a full ride to Johnson & Wales University for their esteemed culinary program. Choosing to remain rooted in Georgia, I pursued my culinary dreams at Le Cordon Bleu, where I received my associate’s degree. It was here that my journey truly began as I immersed myself in the vibrant culinary scene of Atlanta. From humble beginnings at a downtown deli/restaurant called Sawicki to prestigious positions at Alons, Marriott, and even as a chef at a preschool and Wellstar Hospital, each experience shaped me and reaffirmed my belief in the power of good food to bring people together.

Driven by a desire to share my culinary creations with the world, I took the leap and founded my own company, The Taste of Silence. Specializing in catering and private chef services, my team and I have had the privilege of serving clients throughout the city of Atlanta, bringing our unique blend of flavors and expertise to events large and small. Through a fortuitous partnership with The Mixx Cuisine, we’ve expanded our offerings to include signature dishes like our Yellow Rice bowls, featuring a delightful mix of vibrant vegetables and a choice selection of proteins, from succulent lamb chops to tender chopped chicken. Located in the heart of East Atlanta off Moreland Ave, we take pride in offering a diverse menu that caters to every palate, from refreshing salads and hearty wraps to indulgent wings, burgers, and crispy egg rolls.

With every dish we create and every event we cater, we strive to leave a lasting impression, blending culinary innovation with heartfelt hospitality to create unforgettable experiences for our clients and their guests.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Devonte: Devonte: Without a doubt. Have you ever heard that nothing worth keeping comes easy? While I’m still navigating the journey of building a business, it has been a profound learning experience for me. Along the way, I’ve encountered numerous challenges that have tested my resilience and determination. One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is the delicate balance between prioritizing business commitments and nurturing personal relationships.

In embracing the motto that “You have to get in your bag and out of your feelings if you want to survive,” I’ve recognized the need to establish clear boundaries within those relationships to ensure fair treatment for the services I offer. In the food and service industry, it can be tempting to undercut prices or compromise on quality to secure clients and maintain relationships. However, I’ve remained steadfast in upholding the value of my work and maintaining transparency in my pricing structure. This commitment to integrity has not only earned the trust of my clients but has also contributed to the long-term sustainability of my business.

While overcoming these challenges has been no small feat, each obstacle has pushed me to grow. With every setback, I’ve emerged stronger and more determined to succeed. The journey of entrepreneurship is fraught with uncertainty, but it’s also brimming with opportunities for innovation and personal development.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue navigating the ever-evolving landscape of business ownership in this industry, armed with the lessons and insights gained from my experiences. My journey is far from over, but I approach the road ahead with a sense of optimism and unwavering resolve.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
What sets us apart is not just the quality of our food, but the fusion of my upbringing in Atlanta’s west side with the excellence instilled by my mother’s dedication to providing me with the best education possible. This blend of two worlds results in a unique culinary experience that reflects both grit and refinement.

Specializing in catering and private chef services, my business has garnered a reputation for delivering not just meals, but memorable culinary experiences. Each dish is crafted with care and attention to detail, ensuring that every bite is a delight to the senses. Our commitment to impeccable presentation sets us apart, as we believe that dining is not just about taste, but also about aesthetics.

Collaborating with The Mixx Cuisine food truck has been an exciting opportunity to expand our offerings and introduce our clientele to a diverse array of flavors. The Taste of Silence is not just a business—it’s a celebration of food, culture, and the joy of sharing a meal with others.

Networking and finding a mentor can have a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Surround yourself with mentors and peers who inspire and challenge you. I’ve been fortunate to have guidance from my father, cousins, and business partner, whose wisdom has been invaluable. Networking is equally important—remain open to new connections and be receptive to advice from those who have walked the path before you. Success often comes from learning from others’ experiences and leveraging those lessons in your own journey.
