Hi Khyati, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My journey started a few years back while attending Indian community events and different community gatherings I saw people were enthusiast about Indian fashion and trends in Indian traditional/ethnic clothing and jewelry but there were less options to choose and also the collection which was available in the market was a little obsolete kind.
I saw a white space here that could be filled up very well by bringing the Latest Indian ethics here and being an Engineer with Textiles as a specialization, I had quite a good knowledge about fabrics, weaves, and different types of techniques to make the fabric, and so on. Indian ethnic dresses are so versatile, beautiful, and vibrant, Fashion always makes me feel energized and I am passionate and love to explore different varieties so I started my Indian ethnic business journey in the year 2018.
I started it with a Facebook business page and within a week of starting my new business page I got my first order of Indian Banarasi Saree from Florida my first client loved it and then on I have sold thousands of different varieties of clothing and jewelry across the USA to not only to Indian Americans but Americans as well. Now it’s more than 5 years and I am happy to have more than 3400 followers on my Facebook page and 1000+ Instagram followers, who love our collection and their love and support keep me going every day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Ethnic Closet LLC formally known as The Desi Couture is an online store for Indian traditional and ethnic dresses, sarees and fashion jewelry. We are based in Atlanta, Georgia but cater to clients all across the USA. We have different Indian collections for Women, and Kids as well. From our different product ranges, our specialization is in Indian ethnic dresses and sarees.
Indian ethnic collection is very vast and super versatile be it dresses or sarees, Each state of India has its own heritage culture and clothing style and that makes whole Indian fashion vibrant, versatile and super colorful. Handloom sarees are a major part of this Heritage clothing line and We are glad that we have the majority of these Handloom sarees with 100 percent Authenticity and quality.If I name a few types of sarees we have it’s Banarasi, Kanjivaram silk, Bandhani, Ajrakhs,Chanderi,Mals,Cottons, Gadwals, Parsi Garas and the list is quite long actually😌
We also have Vegan silk sarees, Today a lot of people has adopted Vegan food as their food habits,so now they can adore wearing a Silk Saree which is Vegan completely, Vegan silks are soft, lustrous like pure silks but it’s made of plant based fibers and yarns making it a preferred choice who believe in Ahimsa- Non Violence.
One more interesting type is a traditional Ajrakh saree which is made of all natural Vegetable dyes and colors to make the fabric and it’s then handcrafted with age old techniques and Ajrakh prints to make the saree ready. This kind of sarees are made by special Artisans and craftsman who makes these sarees from generations.
Apart from the sarees our USP is designer ethnic dresses be it Anarkalis, shararas/ghararas, Indowestern fusion dresses, or Lehngas, you name it and we have it. Our brand not only supports weavers/artisans in India but also spreads the joy of providing these heritage products to our clients miles away from their homeland.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My mom is very creative and one of my favorite childhood memories is the dresses she used to design for me and my younger sister. It was super fun going to the market and selecting different types and colors of fabric and then she used to design beautiful and very unique dresses, I still remember and cherish it.
She’s still a big support and plays a major role in my business today as all the quality check goes through her experience and expertise.
