Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Harris.
Hi Joy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been a creative person, bouncing between different hobbies – crocheting, baking, photography, and even messing around with doing hair and home decor (still a thing, by the way!). But the one thing that consistently grabbed me was exploring new restaurants and sharing my finds with friends and family.
That passion kicked up after I started managing social media content for other businesses. It was cool, but I really wanted to share my own perspective and favorite spots. At first, I’d just keep these long lists in my phone notes, which became a pain to update constantly then they migrated to Google Maps.
Instagram changed that game. Posting on Instagram, I could easily share my experiences and put my own spin on the restaurants I loved. It started as a way to share my favorites, and now I get to collaborate with awesome businesses, brands I love, and other creators who are just as passionate about food as I am.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely NOT! There have been setbacks for sure, like losing a client or getting rejected on collaborations sometimes. Brands can be very picky, but I haven’t let that stop me from moving forward. This year, I’m taking the “no’s” in stride. You gotta learn from them and keep pushing forward, right? Those rejections just make me want to hustle even harder and make my videos even better. This year’s looking good so far, with some exciting projects on the horizon!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Currently, I work as a freelance social media manager, content creator, and influencer. While it might sound like a lot, what really excites me about content creation is the amazing people I get to meet. You might be surprised to learn that I am NOT a “people person.” However, being around other passionate creators and business owners has pushed me outside my comfort zone in the best way possible.
Now, I find myself initiating conversations and building connections – although let’s be honest, I’m still an introvert at heart and definitely need my alone time to recharge! What I’m most proud of is taking a genuine passion for social media and turning it into a sustainable career that I truly enjoy. It’s incredibly rewarding to support myself by doing something I love.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Don’t get me wrong, I read A LOT of books! But let’s be real, most of them are romances. Not exactly what you’re lookin’ for here, right? There are two books in particular that really help me on a daily basis: “Everything is figureoutable” by Marie Forleo and “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” by Mark Manson
Forleo’s book is like a creativity cheat code. Stuck on a brand pitch or feeling overwhelmed by a problem? This book helps me think outside the box and see things from a whole new angle. Manson’s book it’s all about laser focus and energy. It taught me to stop wasting energy on things that don’t matter and put all my focus on the things that get me closer to my goals. Basically, it helps me prioritize both work and life.
