Kathy Sumardi

Kathy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi! My name is Kathy Sumardi, and I am from Indonesia. I am currently pursuing my Master of Arts in Advertising at Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, and I plan to graduate this summer. From a young age, I’ve identified as a right-brained individual. My artistic journey began early, as I filled the walls of my home with sketches until my parents got me a coloring book and enrolled me in drawing lessons

At 11, my father introduced me to my first camera, a Canon 500D, igniting my passion for photography. Under his guidance, I learned the nuances of composition, lighting, and framing. Our family trips became opportunities for photo expeditions, with my dad, brother, and I embarking on adventures to capture moments worth remembering.

These experiences sharpened my skills behind the lens, leading me to start freelance photography at 17, collaborating with friends to bring our visions to life. Growing up, I knew I was different since all my family members were business majors, and I was the sole artistic member. Nonetheless, I’m thankful for my family’s unending support and unwavering belief in my abilities.

Inspired by my siblings, I pursued my college education at Pensacola Christian College in Florida. Encouraged by my mother and sister, I chose graphic design as my major, recognizing my talent in art and photography. This decision sparked a deep passion for graphic design, thanks to the guidance of my former college professors, Mr. Greg Hewitt, Mr. Kobi Jekel, Ms. Abigail Emtage, Ms. Jess Valentin, and Ms. Kristen Bryant, who nurtured my potential.

After graduating college, I hungered to learn more and elevate the game. Initially aiming for a Master’s in Graphic Design at SCAD, I am grateful for God, who has redirected my path toward a Master’s in Advertising. Throughout my graduate studies, I’ve gained invaluable insights into audience understanding and effective communication strategies. I’ve also developed essential networking skills, learning to boldly engage with others, foster connections, and cultivate relationships.

Despite the challenges faced during my graduate journey, I’m grateful for the unwavering support, guidance, and encouragement of Prof. Judy Salzinger, Prof. Reginald Harrison, and Prof. Gauri Misra-Deshpande for their unwavering support, guidance, and encouragement. Their mentorship pushed me beyond my boundaries, fostering growth with each project undertaken.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey so far has been filled with challenges. Moving away from home to a foreign country, far from my family, has required me to become more independent. Academically, I’ve faced challenges that sharpened my design skills, fostered innovative thinking, and created impactful campaigns within tight deadlines. Collaborative projects have tested my ability to navigate diverse team dynamics, understand individual strengths and weaknesses, and foster mutual respect.

Networking has also been challenging, as it demands courage to engage with others, appreciate their insights, and expand my professional circle. Despite these trials, I see myself as clay, shaped by the pressures I’ve encountered. Each challenge has transformed me into a resilient and capable individual.

Just like crafting a beautiful ceramic piece requires trust, patience, and pressure, I’ve learned to endure sleepless nights fueled by passion and determination, ultimately earning recognition as an award-winning Art Director and Designer, continually pushing boundaries, and embracing new creative endeavors.

In moments of weakness, I turn to prayer, seeking strength from God, and I’m constantly reminded of a Bible verse from Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Moreover, my parents’ constant support and belief in me and their daily prayers have shaped me into who I am today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m currently pursuing my graduate studies in Advertising at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, where I specialize in art direction and creative strategy. My ability to advertise the quirkiness and fun parts of the brand is a key differentiator from other artists’ work.

Alongside my studies, I work as a freelance photographer. I focus on capturing memorable moments such as family portraits, engagement sessions, and weddings. During my free time, I indulge in street photography, using digital and film mediums to capture the essence of the places I visit.

My natural curiosity drives me to explore various routes rather than limiting myself to one. I thrive on experimenting with different problem-solving approaches and eagerly welcome opportunities to broaden my horizons. I’m constantly seeking challenges and pushing myself beyond my comfort zone, a mindset that has led me to win the American Advertising Award for three consecutive years.
