Today, we’d like to introduce you to Andre Boyce.
Hi Andre, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
After working in restaurants and bars all through my twenties, I visited a friend who was in barber school and got a haircut. We talked about what he was doing and how he got into it. It sounded like a great idea. I had some experience curing hair, having cut myself and my brother when we were kids. So, I decided to look into it and found an apprenticeship at a barber shop.
However, I wanted a more diverse clientele, so I explored my options and found a great school in Roswell, Georgia, called Paul Mitchell Esani. It was more of a salon school, but it set me up for success with all the skills I learned in cutting and coloring hair. However, after school, I found myself at a bit of a crossroads in which way to take my career. On one hand, I enjoyed cutting men’s hair and the barber world. On the other hand, the money I could make from women’s hair was penny to dollar. So, I bounced from the salon to the barbershop. My favorite salon I landed at was Muse Salon and Spa in John’s Creek, GA.
I loved it there and learned so much, but I still found myself unhappy because I was chasing the money doing women’s hair when I knew my passion was barbering. After speaking to one of the girls at the salon, she told me about a barber shop where her husband would get haircuts. I looked at their Instagram and instantly fell in love. Looking at their page, I became self-conscious because my haircuts were not at that level.
So, I dug deep and got to practicing. With the help of the lead educator at Muse my skills took off. So, I gained the confidence to reach out to the commodore in Roswell, GA. They were so welcoming and helped me grow. After three years, my position with the Commodore has grown, and my passion has grown with it.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest thing I struggled with was wanting to do men’s hair but missing out on money with women’s hair. But dealing with a lot more headaches in the salon world. Another is having my car repoed while going to school.
I was pursuing my dreams while worrying at a restaurant, and I had an interview at a salon, missed a work meeting at the restaurant, and got fired from the restaurant. So, I took an assistant job at a salon.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Barber specialist in men’s cutting and styling. Master at fading.
In the hair styling world, you will usually have two shops; one can cut the sides, and one can cut the top. At the commodore, we take pride in being able to combine the two.
What does success mean to you?
To me, success is waking up every day and being happy about where you are in life and happy to go to whatever job you are going to. No matter the amount of the check each week, but the fact that you are loving what you do.
