Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Hsu.

Ken Hsu

Hi Ken, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hello everyone! I’m Ken Hsu, currently immersed in Motion Media Design at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design), originally from Taiwan. Before my SCAD journey, I pursued Physics. Today, I want to share my college experience. When I embarked on my Physics journey, I was eager to discover my passion within the subject, so I devoted myself to learning diligently. Luckily, I secured a research assistant position with a professor, where I delved into advanced concepts within his laboratory. However, the path was far from easy. Despite investing the majority of my time, progress was minimal. This period was undeniably frustrating, yet it instilled in me a profound sense of perseverance and resilience. Consequently, whenever I encounter challenges, I steadfastly strive to give my best without hesitation.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Transitioning my major posed a daunting challenge. After college, I committed to turning my love for painting and drawing into a profession. Yet, I faced frustrations from the outset. Compared to peers with years of experience, I felt like a novice. Bridging the gap in design, animation, and creativity was overwhelming. As I delved into various realms like character design and typography, I struggled to find my niche. It took nearly two years to settle on illustration, a discovery that brought immense satisfaction. However, my journey doesn’t end there. I refuse to limit myself to a single style. Instead, I aim to explore and master diverse artistic expressions, turning this ongoing struggle into a source of joy and fulfillment.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I find immense joy in illustration. When I pick up a pen to sketch, I can visualize the image in my mind and effortlessly play with contrasts of light and shadow. My preferred tools are Procreate for thumbnails and tight sketches, while I use Photoshop for coloring. I’m particularly fond of the gradients and textures available in Photoshop, as they add depth and richness to my work. One of my strengths lies in the meticulous attention to detail in my designs. When creating styleframes, I immerse myself in sketching intricate details to make my artwork truly captivating. Admittedly, this level of detail requires more time to complete, but the end result is worth the effort.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I am deeply grateful for the hard-working and wonderful friends I have by my side. Each of us possesses unique personalities, and it’s through these differences that we continuously learn from one another. Some excel in socializing, while others exhibit remarkable discipline. Witnessing their diverse achievements not only inspires me but also provides valuable lessons on how to navigate life. For instance, one of my friends organized the SCAD CoMotion 2024, the largest student-led conference globally, with over 40 participating companies from various cities. Witnessing the monumental effort required to orchestrate such an event was eye-opening. Though I didn’t directly participate, I gained insights into the meticulous planning and execution process. Similarly, my other friends have achieved success in various fields, further enriching my learning journey. Despite still being in the process of learning and yet to enter the design industry, I’m grateful for the incredible teammates I already have in my life.
