Meet Pankhuri Joshi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pankhuri Joshi.

Pankhuri Joshi

Hi Pankhuri, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Hello, my name is Pankhuri Joshi. I am originally from Mumbai, India. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Arts in Advertising at Savannah College of Art and Design. I started my career in Chartered accountancy and soon realized that route wasn’t good for me. So, I had to re-route my career, and that’s where I found my passion for graphic design. I did my under graduation in Communication Design from ISDI Parsons, Mumbai. After graduating, I worked in ed tech for about 3 years while freelancing on projects focused on Branding, Illustration, and UI/UX. I also worked as a senior designer in a design studio, Dots per Inch, after which I felt it was the right time to do my master’s as I had gathered a lot of experience. I decided to choose Advertising because I already had a very strong base in graphic design, and this step would help boost my skills and challenge me further.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely was a rough start for me, jumping from commerce to arts, but I had some excellent mentors who guided me very well throughout my journey. I was always good at software and tech, so that helped me ace my computer skills. And soon post that after working on freelance projects, and working I found my style and the confidence to visualize a project completely. By selecting fonts, color schemes, and images, I attracted demanding projects. Each time, I stretched beyond my comfort zone and accomplished something remarkable that I once deemed impossible at a point.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in branding, packaging, illustration, and UI/UX. I enjoy immersing myself in a brand’s narrative and ensuring that its identity aligns perfectly with the story it aims to tell. I take pleasure ensuring that every aspect of the brand harmonizes seamlessly. From typography and headlines to shapes, illustrations, icons, and imagery, I strive for a cohesive and unified appearance. One of the projects that I am extremely proud of is a packaging design project I did with a brand called Junglee. It’s a beverage brand originating from the USA, specializing in Indian-inspired spirits. The project faced a stringent deadline, necessitating an extensive process to achieve the desired appearance for the cans. Each design decision was carefully deliberated upon, leading to a realization of my growth as a designer since the project’s inception. Transitioning from a focus on aesthetics to making conscientious decisions underscores the critical aspect of design professionalism. What distinguishes me is my emotional perspective. I often perceive things uniquely, resulting in outcomes that deviate from conventional expectations. A career in advertising enables me to channel my emotions effectively, as each brand possesses significant potential to make meaningful contributions to the world.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I would like to give credit to my parents, Haresh and Hema Joshi, because it really wasn’t an easy job convincing them to let me leave Chartered Accountancy behind, especially when my father is one and has his own business. But they believed in me enough to take that risk with me, and now they show off my work. Professionally, my bosses at work, Avi Gehlote, Devansh Malik, Twinkle Khanna, and Akshit Bhasin they supported me in my journey, and I learnt a lot from them in terms of design and professionalism, which gave me the push to start freelancing on my own. Presently, while attending SCAD, Professors Gauri Misra Deshpande, Reginald Harrison, and Judy Salzinger have simplified the concept of advertising for me. Their guidance has not only facilitated my comprehension but also encouraged me to expand my boundaries in connecting ideas, thus nurturing my path towards becoming an Art Director. And lastly, my friends have served as my cornerstone throughout this journey. Seeking their feedback on projects before presenting them to clients or submitting them in class has become a ritual for me.
