Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Brown.
Lindsey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As far back as High School, I remember being interested in human behavior and curious about why people “do what they do.” So, it was an easy decision for me to major in Psychology at Elon University in NC. I attended GA School of Professional Psychology in Atlanta for a Master’s Degree in Counseling. After four years of meeting school and state requirements, I became a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in 2000. I’ve worked in various settings, including psychiatric hospitals and residential settings for adults with chronic mental illness and those needing stabilization. During this time, I shared a mutual client with Farrell Braziel, a psychiatrist in Roswell who founded Cumberland Psychiatric Group in the 1980s. He invited me to join his collaborative practice of psychiatrists and therapists. I was excited to take my knowledge and experience and begin working with couples, teens, and individual adults. I stayed with CPG for ten years before my colleague, Adele Hernandez, LPC, and I opened our own practice. In 2016, Roswell Counseling Group opened its doors, and it’s been growing strong ever since!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Thank goodness Adele and I were in this together from the beginning because neither of us knew what was needed to start a business. We needed to find space to rent and had no idea the things to consider when looking at space. We needed a lawyer to create our own LLCs; Roswell had their own set of requirements that we needed to satisfy. Don’t forget bookkeeping! That was also brand new to us because we had never had to keep track of operational costs before now.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Roswell Counseling Group?
I provide individual therapy to adults 21 and older. I offer a comprehensive range of services to support my clients’ mental health and well-being. Providing both in-person and Telehealth appointments gives clients flexibility and accessibility, which can be crucial for those with busy schedules or living in remote areas. I specialize in depression, anxiety/stress, and bipolar disorders and offer a collaborative approach with prescribing physicians to ensure best treatment outcomes. Additionally, I work with trauma, relationship issues, self-esteem, and changes in life circumstances.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
That if you’re venturing into new waters, don’t expect to know what you’re doing, even 50% of the time. You will have to ask for and accept help from others who know more than you. It’s a great thing to learn from others who have already been through the challenges of starting a new practice.
